Having A Business Image?

Posted: Feb 21, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Business, marketing, budgets, profits, customers, leads, accounting, staff, a lot happens in a small business every day that could quite easily make your head spin around quicker than a child's turning top. Your image is the life and soul of your business, it is what people associate with and it is what people feel they are a part of. So how much time do you spend in making sure what is said, done and projected helps build your business image?

Take for example Mark Zuckerberg founder of Facebook. In the movie Social Network he was portrayed as a ruthless, non-caring, girl driven misfit. The press had a field day. Over the past 5 months he has worked hard on changing the image, showing people his caring side, doing things for charities and in due cause becoming Time magazines person of the year.

Your image both as a person and a business affects your overall success. People don't buy products or services from those they dislike or don't trust, from someone who projects poor service, poor value and poor character?

Your image is so much more than just how you look, it is what you say, what you do not say and what you do. Your image has to be treated as the most important thing in your business. From the first time a prospects calls you to the way your business cards look and in everything in between. It is the colours you choose for your offices, the signs you place out the front, the uniforms or clothes your staff wear, your image is everything that happens in your business. For most business owners those sorts of things just happen without the thought required.

Do you know that companies like McDonalds, America Express & Coke Cola spend millions of dollars per year testing things like the colours in their business, the uniforms staff wear and the customer service systems they have in place. Why? Because they know that every one of these things is their image and could be the different of a few hundred million dollars in profit.

If you took a look around today at yourself and your business what sort of image do you project, what would people say about you, have you asked others what they think about your logo, the business colours, the staff and their friendliness, etc . I know last week I went into a shop in my local area to pick something up, I was greeted with a grunt, the person serving my was most unhelpful and certainly was not pleasant, hence I will never be returning and I will tell everyone I know of my experience and for them not to go there either.

So that business has just lost an opportunity to increase their profit due to one person and the image they projected when I came to purchase. Unfortunately that person was not the owner they just worked there, however because they were not trained properly, because they were not provided with clear systems on how to do something, because they were not monitored the following took place. I know people have bad days, however if your staff are costing your business money on their bad days, it is time for them to move on.

Without an image that people rant and rave you have no business, you have a trickle of customers that once they experience your business will probably not return. If you looked around your business, what little aspects could change so ensure the image of your business is projecting the right message every day.
