Health and safety in winter

Posted: Feb 01, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Cold, wet, icy winter weather can cause really hazardous conditions, on the roads, in the home, and in the workplace, and as such, health and safety precautions absolutely must be stepped up a notch if the risk of accidents is going to stay at an absolute minimum. So, what extra things can you do to ensure that you stay safe, that you are doing everything you can to keep staff and visitors safe from those winter hazards?

The first thing to do is add to your existing health and safety audit, and carry out an assessment of your working environment, taking into account how areas are lit, the signage surrounding stairs, ramps, steps, and steep drops, the ability to deal with icy pavements, warehouses, stairs, steps, and car parks, how your staff are dressed, and how the temperature of your workplace is regulated. All of these things make up the most basic health and safety considerations, and rectifying any areas of shortfall is easy, and affordable when you turn to online retailers for help.

Safety signs are a cost effective way of making people aware of hazards, whether these are related to chemicals, trips and slips, or specifically to ice and other risks associated with winter rather than summer or spring. Not only should the environment itself be fully signed and equipped to deal with potential risks, but your staff should themselves be kitted out correctly, in protective work wear, footwear and headwear that allows them to carry out their jobs with no pain, discomfort, or worry that they are exposing themselves to unnecessary levels of risk.

Investing in hi-visibility clothing, as well as thermal items is particularly important when the weather becomes darker and colder, and you can choose from a huge range of trousers, t-shirts, waistcoats, hats, boots, gloves, and much more when you search and buy online. It's all about making sure your staff are warm, visible, and most of all safe and able to carry out their jobs safely.

The most important pieces of equipment to invest in during the winter months are a salt spreaders, grit bins, safety signs, hi-visibility clothing, thermal clothing, grit, and snow shovels. The way the UK weather is going, it looks as though snow and ice will be a regular occurrence during the autumn and winter months, so it's worth preparing for it as soon as possible, before demand becomes so high that your delivery times increase.

Get essential work wear online, as well as a salt spreader to keep your car park and walkways safe from slip hazards.
