HELMSMAN GIVES ADVICE ON SWINE FLU TO BUSINESSES

Due to the growing rise of Swine Flu, Colchester-based health and safety experts, Helmsman Safety Services, has given us their top tips on how to reduce the chances of an outbreak in your workplace.

1. Ensure that there is a microbicidal soap dispenser in the toilets and notices to encourage people to wash their hands regularly - and not just after using the loo.

2. Use a 'wet wipe' disinfecting tissue regularly to wipe down door handles and remote controls and regularly ensure that cleaners clean all other surfaces with a strong disinfectant, as opposed to a damp cloth.

3. Always cough or sneeze into a tissue type handkerchief, rather than a cloth one, and dispose of waste tissues in a bin.

4. Carry a packet of wet wipes/hand-rub with you to clean your hands when you are out and about, especially when travelling on public transport.

5. Where possible, consider holding teleconferences or use Skype for meetings instead of gathering groups together.

6. Re-assure people that it’s OK to go home if they have a high temperature (over 38°c) and if they have, isolate them and send them home.

7. Discourage people from returning to the workplace until they are fit and well.

8. Ask suppliers, clients etc whose premises your staff may visit, if they have had an outbreak and if so, postpone the meeting.

9. HR policies should be made flexible to help people care for their families.

10. If you have flu-like symptoms visit www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk, or call your GP. Do not turn up at your doctor’s surgery as you may spread infection.
