How Do you Sell your Product Idea?

Our daily necessities and desire to improve our standards of living make us come up with new product ideas, which can contribute to that. Do you think that people just think, ‘Today, I’m going to invent something”? Of course not. It is the situations that we are faced with that give us some ideas as to how certain products could improve a certain action or situation. Unfortunately, many people leave it to that, but others act upon their idea and turn their inspiration into reality. Some people who have a new product idea prefer to sell it, and allow a manufacturer take care of everything. Other people prefer to license their products, and benefit from them on the long run.

It is usually the ordinary people who come up with these brilliant product ideas, and their possibilities to manufacture, distribute and sell the product are limited. Therefore, many inventors prefer to sell their product idea, letting the manufacturer handle the entire process, from production to marketing and selling. Inventors also have the option of patenting their new product ideas.

In order to be able to sell a product idea, it should be patentable, and the status of your product should be at least “patent pending”. As stated before, inventors have two options, once they have patented their idea. They can either license it, meaning that you are still its owner, but you allow usage of it to other people in exchange for royalties, or you can sell your product idea, getting a payment, but no further royalties. Perhaps licensing your idea seems more appealing at first, but consider this: unless you have a product with considerable life expectancy, the evidence that it will sell well, and the possibility to use your technology to develop other similar products, chances are you won’t be receiving any royalties, because the product won’t sell. This is the reason why we should weigh your options seriously, and take advantage of the offers of manufacturers who want to buy your new product idea. You should also consider that if you sell your product idea to a large manufacturer, the product will have a lot more exposure than it would have if you tried manufacturing it yourself, or if you licensed it to a small-size manufacturer.

Before you decide to sell your product idea, you should try to be as well informed as you can, and make sure that you have received enough offers, so that you have what to choose from, and have a basis for comparison. You can try doing this on your own, or you can use some online sources of information. You can use these sources to educate yourself, and find out what the pros and cons of selling your new product idea are. Moreover, we can also use the Internet to find potential buyers for your product idea. How is this possible? You have to contact a team of specialists that will analyze your product, and inform prospective buyers of your idea. Once the contact between you as the seller and the buyers has been established, it is your business to sign a contract or an agreement, in the presence of attorneys or otherwise.

Many manufacturers work with certain licensing brokers or agents, and they can provide you with a list of those. But letting someone else find your buyers for you is so much easier than finding them yourself. All you have to do is access such a specialized web site, present your product idea and let them take care of the rest. It is then up to you to decide whether you approve of the offer you have been made and sign the agreement to sell your product idea.
