How To Assemble a Lean To Greenhouse?

Posted: Mar 18, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

A lean to greenhouse is the ideal solution for those lacking in space, or people who require easy access from their house. Preferably fitted to a south facing wall, a lean to greenhouse will provide you with all the gardening and storage benefits of a free standing greenhouse, albeit on a slightly smaller scale. Depending on the model of lean to greenhouse you choose, you may be able to position the door on either side.

Ensuring you have a solid base and foundation is essential before you attempt to assemble a lean to greenhouse. As per the manufacturer's instructions, concrete slabs are typically used to create a strong base. Flooring must be level and allow for drainage. It is normal for lean to greenhouses that are over a certain length (usually 23 foot) to require bolting down - this may mean installing a strip foundation or base of continuous concrete.

Lean to greenhouses will almost always require more than one person to assemble. Even the most capable of casual DIY 'experts' will need a second pair of hands, be it for holding panels in place whilst fixing, heavy lifting or lining up sides.

Refer to the manufacturer's instructions before you begin. Thoroughly check through all the pieces that are to be assembled. Lay the pieces out, ensuring you have adequate space. It can often be helpful to tick pieces off as you go along, group identical items together and gather all small nuts, bolts and screws in one place. Also, before you start be sure to have all the tools you need to hand. To assemble a lean to greenhouse you normally require - at the very least - a spirit level, screwdriver, spanner, tape measure, scissors, variety of drill bits and a spade.

The roof is normally assembled first - a task that is likely to involve threading PVC glazing strips into the glazing bar grooves, laying out the parts and bolting them together. You may need to affix apex plates for added security and to bolster eaves guttering.

Next, assemble the front of the lean to greenhouse, following a similar procedure to the roof. It is often advised that nuts and bolts are only loosely tightened at first, as this allows for manoeuvrability when assembling - they must be secured in place later, however. Eaves braces and gable braces will usually be fixed at this stage, offering additional stability to the structure.

The lean to greenhouse will now require attaching to a wall. It is essential at this stage to get your spirit level out and you will be grateful for another man on the job! You will need to place the frame against the wall, drill through fixing holes, then remove the frame and fit sealing strips and a glazing bar. The structure is then loosely attached to the wall before concrete is set over each base anchor.

The next step is to glaze the roof, which should be done by following the manufacturer's instructions carefully. Usually, roof venting is installed next, followed by the front of the lean to greenhouse, then the 'plain end' (end without the door) and finally the door end (door assembly may be required before fitting).

Upon completion your lean to will just need door tracks popped into place, as well as guttering and water outlet pipes. The structure will then require tightening up (as mentioned above regarding the nuts and bolts).

Be sure to regularly check the fittings on your greenhouse and refer to the manufacturer's instructions for maintenance advice on how to keep your new structure in tip top condition.
