Summer is fast approaching and now is the perfect time to outline a strategy for how to save money on electricity bills this summer. Many business owners don't realize just how much money they could save if they take certain actions to cut back on unnecessary electricity costs. Additionally, by doing so, you are reducing the likelihood of experiencing a blackout at your business, which tends to be a problem for many businesses during the summer months. Best of all, these tips come at little to no cost to implement.

  • Keep your thermostat at 78 degrees

Although it may be counter-intuitive, if you work in an area that becomes sweltering during the summer months, working in a 78-degree atmosphere will feel refreshing when compared to the outdoors. Furthermore, and most importantly, 78 degrees is the ideal temperature to set for the summer months because it is the perfect boundary between comfort and cutting electricity costs. You will find that the money you are saving on air conditioning costs is extremely significant.

  • Close the blinds and install ceiling fans. Leave the front door closed!

Over summer, keep the blinds closed to keep the sunlight from making your office too hot. Additionally, installing ceiling fans can help keep the temperature lower without generating too much additionally electricity. Also, leaving your front door open is one of the worst mistakes you can make when trying to save money on your electricity bill; use an "Open" sign to let your customers know you're open and keep the cool air inside!

  • Make sure electronics are turned off when not in use

Turning off electronics when they are not in use is one of the easiest ways to cut electricity costs, and the savings will be significant. Better yet, use power strips to consolidate all of your wires into one place with an easy "on/off" switch. Make sure to remind your employees that it is required that they turn off computers and other electronics before leaving – keep this advice on a poster in a central location in your office, if necessary.

  • Use food appliances as efficiently as possible

Be sure to fully load your office's dishwasher as fully as possible to make the most of the energy costs you will incur with this device. Even better, ask your employees to take a minute or two to wash their dishes by hand. Keep your refrigerator fully stocked so it retains the cold for a longer period of time.
