How to Get Fans and Followers When Your Business Caters to Prospects in Crisis

If your business solves a problem (while your service may be great), you may have found it is harder to build a base of fans or followers on your Social Media than you may have initially thought. When an individual agrees to "like" or "follow" your page, their friends and family will be able to see it on their profile.

If you offer a service that helps people in crisis, following your page could indicate to their friends and family that something is going on, that they want to keep secret. Here are some examples:

  • Someone who is in a financial crisis may be apprehensive about following a debt counsellor's page. No one wants their friends or family knowing that they have financial hardship.  This could be an extremely sensitive issue for most.
  • Someone who is having medical problems may not want to follow a page hosted by a company that treats that type of problem.
  • If someone is having a marital problem they may not want to follow a marriage counsellor, making all their friends and family aware of personal issue.

So how do you get around this? You do it by not focusing on the negative aspects of your service starting with the Social Media pages. While you should have pages that reflect your corporate identity, you can also consider themed pages that are named something positive and focus on a positive theme that would be associated to your program/product or service. This way prospects can feel more comfortable to follow you.

For example if your company name was "Canadian Debt Counselling", you could start a themed page called "Have the Best Credit".

Once a prospect decides to follow you, you will be able to continually soft market to them so it pays to get creative and consider a themed campaign depending on your industry.
