How to Get Your Point Across in 30 Seconds and 120 Pages - A Book Review

Posted: May 13, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

The author, Milo Frank, is an expert on the subject and clearly demonstrates it. At just 120 pages, this quick read will be a satisfying and performance-enhancing investment for not a lot of time. From his extensive TV background, Mr. Frank explains why you have just 30 seconds and how to achieve your communication goal in that short amount of time. He gives clear examples in each chapter and finishes them off with a 30 second summary.

But I'm sure you want a little more detail on why this is a helpful book and what you can expect from it. As a business communications consultant, Milo Frank has seen too many examples of poor communication that resulted in frustration for everyone. Fortunately, there will be no such disappointment for you. Even if you simply skim the end of each chapter for the 30 second summary, you'll get great tips for getting your point across.

Here's an even better way to read, understand and learn the techniques. Read one chapter each morning. Then try to apply the one item you learned all day long. The next day read another chapter and put that technique on top of the previously one. There are eight parts to a good communication message and a total of only twelve chapters. You can work your way through in a couple of weeks. Repeat as needed.

Want to practice your new techniques? There are two great ways to reinforce and cement what you've learned. First, you can join a Toastmasters club. This is a world-wide organization that helps people build their communication and public speaking skills. Volunteer every time for the "Table Topics" portion. This is a one to two minute off the cuff, or extemporaneous, speech. Perfect timing based on what Mr. Frank teaches in the first chapter.

Or, another great way to practice getting your point across in 30 second segments is to go to a business networking event. Introduce yourself to as many people as you can manage during the event. Try to answer every question and keep everything you say to less than 30 seconds. You'll be amazed at how much you can get across in that time and how much you'll be liked and appreciated by those you meet.

Beth Bridges has attended over 2,000 networking events in the last 7 years as the Membership Director and Chief Networking Officer of a large west coast chamber of commerce. Sometimes she takes longer than 30 seconds to get the point across, but she's working on it.
