In Excess of Billion Barrels of Oil Equivalents to be Discovered in Odessa Shelf Areas - New Playmodels Opens for a New Upside for Ukraine Oil and Gas

 The Black Sea basin originated as a back-arc basin during Cretaceous times. Continental rifting took place during the Aptian to Albian with large-scale crustal thinning and separation occurring since the Cenomanian, mainly along a former Albian volcanic arc. Both western and eastern Black Sea basins opened almost simultaneously during Cenomanian to Coniacian times. However, during the Santonian to Palaeocene, the Black Sea region was affected by compressional deformation. Apart from a tensional event that took place in eastern part of the region during the Eocene, deepening of the basin has been induced by compressional deformation from latest Eocene to recent times.
In the Gulf of Odessa, the deep Karkinit trough, which contains more than 3 km of sediments, began to subside during the Barremian times or even earlier.
At the regional scale, deep rapidly subsiding troughs began to develop during the Oligocene: the Karkinit Trough, Alma Trough, Sorokin Trough, Tuapse Trough
From boreholes located in Karkinit trough. Heat flow. determinations were made at sub-bottom depths from 1200. to 2800 m and interested Miocene sections revealed.
The main promising prospects in the basin are Malossa-like Mesozoic carbonate reservoirs of the Andrussov and Shatshky Ridges and Mio-Pliocene prograded delta fans and turbidites of continental slope and toe. Water depths in Black Sea which are up to 2200 meters are no longer a technical problem (but still a economical challenge) in view of encouraging achievements gained by the upstream industry in Brazil, West Africa and the Gulf of Mexico.
However, an important new play in the western Karkinit Trough and adjacent areas would be the continuation of the Lower Cretaceous prospects / leads that have already been identified onshore in the Karkinit Trough to the east. Several Lower Cretaceous fields are identified and developed onshore in the eastern Karkinit Trough and within the Shtormovaya Graben to the south. These fields have good sand development, but reservoir quality is generally poor due to high percentages of tuffaceous material and pore-occluding alteration products (chlorite and zeolites) derived from Volcaniclastics derived locally from the Crimea Mountains.
Regional seismic in the western Karkinit Trough shows evidence for sand development off of the Scythian Platform from the north of the Trough.
Basement schists and gneiss of the Ukraine Shield could provide the source for clean, quartz rich Sands as opposed to the locally derived source in Crimea Mountains to the east.
There are indications of improved reservoir quality are seen in the thin-bedded sands at TD in the nearby well Galitsana-2. Overpressure in this section seen in the same well could assist enhancing the porosity of the potential reservoir intervals. Potential reservoir facies would include shallow marine / shoreface sands fronting delta and deep-water turbidite slope and basin floor fans.
The main exploration risks associated with this play are presence and quality of the Lower Cretaceous reservoirs and required seal against crystalline basement.
Hydrocarbon charge is not considered a risk due to the presence of commercial gas/condensate in adjacent fields and the identification of gas-mature Lower Cretaceous shale within the Karkinit Trough itself.
The resource potential for this play model within the Karkinit Trough would exceed billion of barrels of oil equivalents.
Already established Joint Venture Agreements in this region will aim to test this play model and we will await and see if this play model will revitalize the exploration and production within the Karkinit Trough and maybe the Shtormovaya Graben to the south of Karkinit Trough.
A total of 16 leads and prospects within the Lower Cretaceous section is identified within the Karkinit Trough itself, and 10 leads and prospects are identified within the Shtormovaya Graben. The potential for these leads and prospects exceed several billion barrels of oil equivalents (most likely gas).
It is needless to say that the potential is large and it would make Odessa Shelf area of the Black Sea even more attractive to western companies as all these prospects and leads are at waterdepths less than 100 meters.
