Little Dwellings All The Rage With Todays Buyers!

The latent trend toward little homes is a result of the financial recession, but has many benefits to both homeowners and our nation. It is reported that nearly 60% of the builders in the United States are building little houses, by the American Institute of Architects, and the higher demand for such construction is reinforced by the reduction in other costs of housing.

As the recession started to wreak havoc on the real estate market back in 2007 the size of houses being built started to decrease along with every one's' 401ks. With the lack of money came a desire for a smaller home that worked and the square footage average dropped by over 300 square feet.

These mini-homes can even be built using re-used parts from other houses or outbuildings to lower the expense. Old barns and houses that are being torn down have supplied many materials that can be used again for the builders who are constructing smaller scale homes.

Given that the smaller houses are much cheaper in value and can still have many of the extravagances of larger homes, you can understand why the trends are pointing up for them.


One builder in California builds and sells small homes, both on wheels and on foundations. The retail costs for his plans are around one thousand dollars and they are erected for the mid thirties. Relating having a small home built to having a fine suit taylored to you, he says many buyers prefer the small custom houses he builds. Since it is a custom home, every plan has specific inclusions that are important to the home owners. The traditional construction that many small houses have to utilize are space savers like build in cupboards and storage space.

Even big companies like Lowe's home improvement stores sell a model of a kit home that is designed for owner construction to save you money.

Given the tendency of people with extra room to accumulate more stuff, the little home size helps many people deal with the materialist nature we all tend to have. Most homeowners are deciding to buy the more humble houses over the preferred "McMansions" of the lastest past few years.

Many people prefer the modern features of larger houses, but you do not have to go without when you buy a smaller home. They smaller houses even feature amenities like claw foot tubs and doubel door refrigerators for those of us who prefer those appliances. The green houses angle is one that cannot be overlooked in terms of a smaller scale home size either.

Featuring reduced energy costs and lower mortgage payments, smaller homes are really an easy sale. homes that have conventional ceiling heights of about 8 feet have a record of reduced energy costs. This holds true for not only heat but air conditioning as well, so this reduced home plan trend works everywhere from Texas to Alaska.

Not only can you save on your energy costs but you can also save in regard to the way you use your building lot. Given that a smaller footprint on the lot will allow for more room to grow gardens, put up gazebos and landscaping. Putting up that extra concreate pad for a basketball hoop may even be a reality!
