It's January. You've just spent the past few weeks relaxing with family and friends over the holiday season. Your batteries are charged and you are ready to put down this year's resolutions.

The most common New Year Resolutions include losing weight, making more money and spending more time with family and friends.

So how can you achieve all three? Let me share some golden rules with you about making more money that'll make you feel better about yourself, give you more energy to undertake a healthier eating plan and thereby help you lose weight; all centered around you not having to work in a job by starting and growing your own home based business.

Here are the 5 Golden Rules To Making Money Online:

1. Get The Right Mindset - The Biggie!

A lot of people start their online business with a job mentality. They expect to start with little or no capital (like in a job) and expect to receive the equivalent of their monthly salary within their first 30 days of business. And they expect this to happen without investing in their business, no advertising, no prospecting or no training. If any of these services are offered to them they expect to get them for free.

By the time 60 days has ticked around they're on their way out of business and are looking for another job. They now have the opinion that home based businesses don't work, network marketing is a scam and online businesses simply are a waste of time.

The correct way to enter a home based business is to have a business attitude. Making money online requires an investment of time, money and 'blood ,sweat and tears'. You are not going to be able to replace your current monthly salary within your first 30days. Yes there will be exceptions but for most it'll take a little longer.

Your attitude needs to be one of giving. Don't look at an opportunity as "what's in it for me" only, but "what you can give" to that opportunity. A mate of mine Rob is a very giving guy. When he holds an opportunity meeting it's done in a stylish hotel or restaurant with finger food and drinks. He could easily charge $50 per head, but he doesn't. He's shouted me countless lunches and dinners. Never once has he asked for a cent. It's about establishing relationships and usually these reciprocate in may ways.

You've got to programme your mind to GIVE!

2. Plan, Plan, Plan And Set Goal Dates

Your in your car in New York. You want to drive to Los Angeles. Do you start driving?

No! You work out a plan. You check the map, determine the distance and time it'll take to do the trip, organise your luggage, grab some fuel and book some accommodation.

So why do some many people start their day, week or month with no plan. How are you going to go from 'A' to 'B' in business without a plan. It's ironic that most people spend more time planning their holidays then their lives.

So get planning. If you're not sure how to do it, 'Google' the term planning or goal setting and you'll be able to get plenty of help.

But one important step with a plan or goal is that you need an end date. You must decide when this plan or goal will be accomplished by. No date equals no end which means your plan or goal will not come to fruition.

3. Invest In Yourself And Take ACTION

Jim Rohn once said that rich people have libraries in their homes. Poor people invest in plasma tv's, gossip magazines and donuts.

My library is building. I've spent countless thousands on books, courses, seminars, dvds and cds. But talk to a 'newbie' or somebody not cutting in their home based business and they'll tell you they can't afford it. But in their next breath they'll tell you about their vacation to the beach or the latest pair of Gucci loafers they've just bought. Go figure. And they wonder why they don't make money online.

However all the investment in the world won't make you a cracker if you don't put it into action. Watching a dvd about how to make money online won't make you rich. You have to action it.

And success might not be instanteous. You'll need to be consistent and persistent!

4. Be Responsible To Yourself

Make sure you action things. Sometimes they don't work. Be prepared to accept that and move on.

Don't get on the 'negative nelly' band wagon and beat yourself up by saying "Nothing I ever do works. I'm a total failure"

Be responsible for what you do. Don't worry about what others think. Do you really think your 'dream slayers' are going to look after you in retirement. No! Get over these people and move away from them. As you become more successful so do the people you associate with.

5. Get Mentored By The Right People

For years I struggled with my online business because I was trying to do everything. Advertising, website design, marketing, prospecting, lead generation...everything!

I was buying all the 'gurus' stuff but I wasn't moving forward. Sure I was offered mentoring and coaching but I always considered it too expensive.

One day I decided to take the plunge and invest into mentoring and coaching. I still remember how much I sweated as I put through my credit card payment for the service.

But this is what I found. I noticed a significant improvement in my business. My mentor was able to provide me a whole range of new skills. We were able to tweak my sites, blogs, articles and videos to dramatically improve the number of visitors I received. This lead to more sales and therefore more money.

My primary mlm business went from 1 or 2 signups per month to over 1 per day! In fact it's much higher than that now. Using certain strategies I learnt from my mentors (and I teach them to my group) I've been able to create critical mass in my business that it's self perpetuating.

If you wanted to take flying lessons you'd seek out a pilot, wouldn't you? If you want to make $100,000 per year or even a million dollars per year, you'd talk to somebody already doing it, wouldn't you?. Don't sign up with the pretenders.

I've always adopted this attitude. I've been approached by many people to join them in their 'wonderful opportunity', but I'll only ever sign with winners.
