Modern security products from CCTV surveillance to X-ray screening

For as long as people have had any concept of value, there has been a need for security. As long as people possess something that another wants - something that they can't watch constantly - there have been methods to protect it, whether by employing guards or by controlling access to it via locks or controlled buildings.

Today, the rapid technological growth of the past century or so - and in particular, the past few decades - has given a huge increase in the types and effectiveness of such security measures. Security products such as CCTV surveillance have made 24 hour observation of valuable items a possibility, whilst items such as biometric scanners have made lock picking a near impossibility.

Today, the human component of a security system remains critical but for the first time it doesn't stand alone. Instead security staff are bolstered by technology that gives greater awareness and control over a situation - whether its protecting an entire premises or a single room - than could ever be humanly possible.

Here are some examples of the different broad types of security products and how they help in practise:

Surveillance

From a single camera to complex computer controlled systems that cover acres of property (sometimes in several different locations), Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras have transformed security operations and measures. In themselves the devices act as a powerful deterrent - anyone who commits a crime in front of one could easily be identified and the footage used as evidence against them. Monitored by security staff, they allow for truly effective security measures - staff can react instantly to any incident or suspicious activity that they see take place within view of the cameras. Coupled with a radio system (an underrated but vital item for security) staff can quickly prevent intrusions or apprehend suspects.

Perimeter Protection

CCTV is an effective way of monitoring several areas but there is a limit to how effectively it can secure a perimeter. Real-time reactions require real-time observation, which means that ultimately CCTV can only help security personnel as long as it is effectively manned. Perimeter security products on the other hand, provide an entirely automatic early warning system that detects any attempted intrusion and in many cases, delays intruders so that personnel can apprehend them. These can range from simple gate, fence and lock systems to much more sophisticated technology. Electrostatic taut wire systems are comparatively basic alongside seismic sensors or microwave movement detectors, yet they still provide an instant alert when breached and even pinpoint the intruders point of entry.

Access control and identification

One of the greatest concepts in security was perhaps the very first security product: the lock. Simple as the idea is, it's undoubtedly effective. Yet almost all locks are vulnerable in the right circumstances. For as long as there has been mechanical locks, there have been lock pickers. Furthermore almost every type of access control system must, to be effective, allow certain people through. Traditionally this has been accomplished through possession of a key - but of course, keys can be carried by the wrong person. Today this problem has been largely overcome with the advent of biometric identification systems. Rather than rely on a physical, external object for verification and entry, these systems check the actual physiological aspects that are unique to an individual and only allows those previously cleared by the system entry. These systems range from fingerprint scanners to face recognition devices, to retinal and iris recognition systems and even DNA scanners. You can fake a key - you can't fake your retinal pattern.
