Morgan Lovell Reveals The Colour's Green In Lighting Podcast

Bright ideas for the future of lighting – including futuristic, ‘Star Trek' style illumination that follows a person's every move – are discussed in the latest podcast from office design experts Morgan Lovell.

Peter Hunt, chief executive officer of The Lighting Association - Europe's largest organisations focused on lighting – discusses how initiatives are being developed to deliver greater efficiencies and comfort in the workplace.

He describes how LED lights are the green lighting method of the future, after billions of pounds investment in their research and development by lighting manufacturers.

With lighting in office environments currently consuming around 30 per cent of buildings' total energy use, LEDs are already showing approximately a 50 per cent reduction in energy consumption compared to fluorescents – although Peter describes this figure as a ‘moving target' as new advances continue to evolve.

As well as product developments, Peter describes that a system approach to lighting, which involves the careful management of lighting in an environment, can also offer substantial energy savings.

Peter said: "For years light has been thrown at the workplace, with high levels  across desks, floors and corridors – and we don't need that level of light.

"What we need is enough light to perform our tasks and make the environment comfortable - but we also need to make it interesting with some contrast, with lower levels of light away from task areas and the local environment."

Since its launch in 1939, The Lighting Association has developed into the largest organisation in Europe for companies in the lighting industry.

The Association, which works closely with Government departments, has a strong technical focus and owns its own test laboratories located at its headquarters in Telford, Shropshire.

This podcast is the fifth in the Green Office series, being produced bi-monthly by office fit out specialists Morgan Lovell.

Listeners can hear about the latest trends, technology and people in the world of green office design.

A podcast is a pre-recorded ‘radio show' that is posted for download on the internet, typically on iTunes. Users subscribe to a podcast and download individual ‘episodes' to their iPods or MP3 players to listen while commuting, exercising or at home.
