Technical innovations in the recent years have provided businesses with the option of outsourcing their non-core tasks, which is cost-effective as well as flexible. However, to tap the potential of outsourcing, proper co-ordination between the client company and the BPO is imperative.

Technology has made things possible which were seemingly impossible a few years ago. Thanks to technological advancement, businesses can today automate jobs and processes, or even outsource their work bringing down the costs to great extent. This has brought phenomenal changes in the way businesses are conducted.

More and more businesses are now concentrating on their core capabilities, leaving non-core tasks, also called supplementary tasks, to outside organizations. This helps them to reduce the size of their regular staff and infrastructure, thus lessening their expenses substantially. As the organizations handling the outsourced jobs specialize in these, they can do the tasks much more efficiently and in a cost-effective way.

Technology has virtually eliminated the distance factor. A process can be outsourced to a country located thousands of miles away, without any fear of deterioration in work quality and deadlines. Factors considered while outsourcing a job are the infrastructure available, skill level of employees and the politico-economic environment of the host country. Countries like India have presented themselves firmly on the outsourcing map, thanks to their pool of English speaking and technically educated people.


Technologies used by the outsourcing business entity and the service provider can be seamlessly integrated to ensure constant flow of data and information. Technical innovations such as cloud computing and remote system control are huge steps for streamlining processes, and create a feeling among the in-house and offshore employees that they are working for the same cause. The employees must be technically able to work on the database and consult one another efficiently. Communication is the key for setting up a really productive outsource team. It pays to spend some time in the contract negotiation process with the service provider stipulating the handling of communications, metrics for measuring success and delivery of progress reports. It is always advisable to appoint a person at the home base responsible for directing the outsource teams. The manager can use tools such as Skype, instant message, teleconferencing and the telephone to co-ordinate with outsourced workers.

Outsourcing of business processes has become a preferred strategy for conducting profitable businesses today. During the period of economic slowdown, the strategy gains even more significance as it becomes even more important to cut down costs and save as many bucks as possible. So, in tough times, outsourcing becomes the only means to keep the ship afloat.

Apart from the cost effectiveness, another major advantage business process outsourcing provides is flexibility. For instance, BPO providers usually charge on a fee-for-service basis. Hence, the outsourced tasks are classified as a variable cost, rather than fixed cost. The clients have to pay for only the level of service they need instead of any lump sum amount. This aspect of outsourcing provides the clients considerable flexibility.

Today's Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) firms are offering a plethora of services such as call center services, software development services, telecommunications, insurance, accounting, documentation etc. Businesses in western countries are outsourcing all possible processes of their operations to their BPO partners in countries such as India, China and the Philippines. The option of getting quality work at lower cost drives the businesses to look for efficient business process outsourcing companies. The outsourcing trend is expected to show the growth graph for several more years from now.
