Be Punctual
Arriving on time or early is one of the best ways to make a great first impression. Nowadays people are very busy, and you are taking a time slot on their appointment calendar. If you are late, you are wasting time that could be spent meeting your potential boss, or the human resources representative. It may also demonstrate that you don't appreciate the oppurtunity and you may be late often.
If you were caught in a traffic jam, or the situation was outside of your control, you can protect yourself. You should contact the person who set up the interview. You may have to reschedule the interview. Apologize for the inconvience and give them the option to reschedule.
During the Interview
When you arrive at the office, make sure to smile and treat everyone that you meet with respect. You may feel the person at the front desk is your subordinate if you are interviewing for a manager psoition. You are wrong. Anyone can fill in at the switchboard at some small companies, so don't make any assumptions.
A firm handshake goes a long way in making a good impression. The worst thing that you can do is the infamous fish-tail handshake. If your hand is floppy and you only take hole of the other person's fingers, you have a fish-tail handshake. Don't shake like this. Use a firm grip to grab their entire hand but make sure not to squeeze too hard. Since this has nothing to do with your job performance, it may seem completely irrelevant. But it plays an important role in your evaluation. Strong people have strong handshakes.
Make sure to sit up straight like you were taught growing up, during the interview. It will help make you look as if you were alert and interested. Make sure to make eye contact, but don't make it uncomfortable by staring. You are allowed to look at any information or notes they hand to you. Look them in the eye when answering a question or when they are speaking to you.
Ask the interviewer a couple questions also. This demonstrates both intelligence and interest.It allows for you to demonstrate both interest and intelligence. At that terrible last minute when your future boss asks if you have any more questions, hit him or her with a zinger and ask "how does this job impact you?" Too few people think to ask this question, even though it is great. No matter how high the rank, every employee at the company has a boss. It is your job to make that that person's life easier.
