Post and parcel delivery companies find success in drive to cut emissions
Progress towards meeting ambitious targets set for businesses in the parcel delivery and postal business sector, which would see their total emissions of CO2 gas cut by 20 per cent between 2008 and 2020, has been good, according to a leading industry body. The International Post Corporation (IPC) executive has revealed that, in the two years since the targets were laid out, its member companies have achieved cuts in their CO2 emissions of nearly 600,000 tonnes.
This reduction is greater than expected for the first year of a 12-year period, the IPC says, and as a result it adds that it has been delighted with the progress achieved so far.
Manager of sustainability at the IPC, Peter Reitsma, has called the results amazing, and beyond what his organisation had hoped for. It was the equivalent of eliminating the annual CO2 output of a town of 50,000 people, he added. The post and parcel delivery sector produced 7.7million tonnes of CO2 in 2009, so the reduction represented more than seven per cent of its original total output, Mr Reitsma added.
People in the industry were now beginning to ask just what would level of emissions cuts could be achievable by 2020, he said, and how sustainable parcel delivery might eventually be. In answer to this, Mr Reitsma said the industry was standing by its original 20 per cent target for 2020, as he believed that, while ambitious, this was an achievable target. Postal and parcel delivery services from 22 countries had signalled their commitment to the programme by the end of 2009, the latest to join being Austria and Italy.
Delivery companies are ordering increasing numbers of alternatively-powered vehicles as they step up their commitment to the programme. Hybrid and electrically-propelled vehicle manufacturers are committing themselves to developing solutions which are suited to the particular needs of the mail and parcel delivery sector.
The greatest savings in CO2 emissions can be achieved in urban areas, and many delivery companies are either evaluating the use of alternative fuels for their fleets, or have taken the plunge and ordered brand new vehicles, whose performance is being closely evaluated to see how it compares with less CO2-efficient models.
With major steps also being taken by motor manufacturers to produce engines which are more environmentally responsible, it is clear that parcel delivery can play a major role in vehicles' overall emissions of greenhouse gases.
As they see the worldwide demand for their services grow, companies such as DHL and Parcelforce are seeing the merits of adding more environmentally-friendly vehicles to their fleets.
