Pre-Employment Background Checks

Posted: May 25, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

Just like a resume and interview, background checks give business owners pertinent information about their potential employees.  These checks often highlight a candidate's potential hiring risks and criminal history.  They can be used to verify information that the candidate has supplied including previous work history.  Pre-employment background checks can prevent employers from hiring workers who may cause trouble in the future.

Recruiting the right employee for a job is one of the many challenges that business owners must face.  Resumes and interviews do not give enough information about the true character of a candidate.  Employers need much more information to determine whether or not a person is a good fit for their company.

A pre-employment background check can be performed to verify such information as education, training, and previous job experience.  In addition, an employer may identify a candidate as a potential hiring risk from behaviors of the past.  Some of these behaviors may include criminal history, past drug use, civil litigation, credit history, and driving records.  All of this information is useful in determining whether a potential employee should be hired or not.

Employers who use pre-employment background checks tend to choose candidates who are more efficient, have higher productivity, and increased quality over those who do not use some sort of pre-employment screening technique.  Because background checks eliminate less qualified applicants, employers are able to create a work staff that is professional and best suited for the job at hand.  Turnover tends to decrease as well.

Pre-employment background checks are an effective tool at identifying those applicants who have a history of misconduct in the workplace.  Theft, fraud, and previous episodes of drug use at work will be uncovered in a screening.  This allows employers to steer clear of those candidates who may be a potential liability to them in the future.  Hiring those applicants could result in a loss of customers and the destruction of your brand or image in the marketplace.

Bad credit reports and a history of bankruptcy may indicate that an applicant is under financial strain.  Some employers believe that this strain could cause an employee to steal if given the opportunity.  Many business owners simply are not willing to take this type of risk when hiring.

Employers must demonstrate reasonable care when hiring employees in order to protect them from possible litigation in the future.  If an employee should happen to injure a co-worker or customer, that employer could be liable.  Knowing a person's background may indicate what their behavior in the future could be.  If an applicant has a violent past, this may be a warning sign that he or she could be a potential liability to your business in the future.

Making pre-employment background checks an integral part of the hiring process will ensure that business owners are able to reduce their risk of potential employee problems later.  Knowing as much about a candidate's background as possible may prevent hiring personnel from making a poor choice.  Searching on the Internet will not give you thorough information and is not sufficient for hiring.  A private investigator has access to nationwide databases and information that the general public does not. He will be able to provide you with detailed reports that will make your decision to hire easier.
