John Souter has chosen the gorgeous island of Maui as home base for his real estate investing business. He owns millions of dollars worth of real estate in several states. He sets his own hours. And his commute... if you can all it that... takes him about 15 seconds as he walks from his master bedroom suite, down the hallway to his private office.
You've heard all of the bitter publicity about real estate recently. Well, let me tell you, real estate investing is far more solid than any other investment bar none.
In a recent survey conducted by Washington-based Guidant Financial Group, just about 1,000 self-directed IRA holders confided what they were planning on using their retirement money to invest in. You know what? For most of these smart investors, the first choice was real estate.
Despite a slow national real estate market, real estate was the top choice for self-directed investors, with 65 percent of the survey takers singling it out as their investment of choice.
It is also curious to see what kinds of real estate these investors are choosing. Close to 60 percent were looking at rental properties, while more than 36 percent had pre-foreclosure and foreclosures in their sites, with just over 28 percent looking at raw land. Twenty-nine percent were looking at tax liens and deeds (which is still closely tied to the real estate market).
David Nilssen, president and CEO of Guidant, stated that "These numbers provide valuable insight into the minds of investors. It demonstrates that, although the real estate market is experiencing a downturn, many still continue to think of real estate as a secure and viable means to growing their nest egg."
According to the survey, other possibilities being looked at included: 22.8 percent for business and franchises; 22 percent for hard money lending; 19.3 percent on notes; 19 percent were looking at vacation properties, while 10.4 percent were looking at foreign investments, and 7 percent had securities in mind.
This should let you know that real estate ought to still be a centerpiece in any investors strategy.
