Retaining a Strong Foreign Client Base

If you own a business that caters to a high clientele of foreign speakers, you'll want to do all you can to accommodate them. There are some important things to do in order to keep your foreign speaking customers feeling comfortable and at ease when the do business with you. First, make sure to employ one or two translators, second, always print all publications in your native language and in the dominant foreign language at your business, and last, always resolve any conflict with foreign speakers in a fair and quick way.

Hiring people who can converse with your customers is essential. If Spanish is the dominant second language spoken at your business then hire a few competent and friendly native Spanish speakers to work full time. When a problem arises you'll want to make sure to direct all foreign speakers to your native speaking employees. People who speak a different language will be more likely to come to your business if they know there will be someone there to help them who can speak their native tongue.

When hiring bi-lingual employees make sure they know all the vocabulary associated with your business. You'll want to test them a bit to see if the know how to say everything they'll need to know to work with your foreign clients. If you're hiring someone who is not a native speaker in the second most used language at your company then ask them if they learn quickly and know how to pick up vocabulary fast. Ask them if they've every taken a business language class and see if they know how to memorize new words rapidly. You don't have to be fluent to communicate important information but it does help your business immensely to have native speakers on hand.

Train your employees to handle all conflicts with tack and efficiency, regardless of a language barrier. Good customer service is essential at any place of business but is especially important for those who handle clients from different language groups.

If you can hire a good customer service representative that speaks a foreign language fluently consider it an investment. If you have someone who can handle issues with clients as soon as they arise then you will be able to retain more customers and have an overall better environment for your foreign speaking friends. Look closely at your budget and see if you can afford to hire a good bi-lingual employee to work in your customer service division. It will be worth it in the end when you have a strong client base who trusts your business and comes back again and again. Creating an environment of trust for all your customers doesn't happen over night but is worth the work when you gain a reputation for being fair and accommodating to people from many back grounds.

Train them well to be courteous and fair to all people regardless of cultural background. If you really make it a priority to support your customers who speak a different language you're business will grow and your reputation will draw lots of new customers. Living in a country where you don't speak the native language can be frightening and frustrating. For people who have to deal with this everyday, finding a business that is conscientious of your struggles and makes things easier is a great comfort.
