Should You Discuss Your Business Plans With Others?

It is understandable that when you get that big idea, the one that will propel you into the world of business ownership, that you want to tell the whole world so everyone can share your excitement. However, in providing business details you open yourself up to circumstances both good and bad.

First, let's look at the negatives. You have this amazing idea and you are certain the niche in the market you are aiming for has yet to be conquered. It is a wide-open idea, yet few, if any businesses are fulfilling the need.

By boasting about your amazing idea - by explaining why it is such a good idea you have just given anyone who hears and who is anything less than trustworthy a license to go and pursue the idea on their own. You have just lost the edge you once had by having a unique and fresh idea.

Now of course not everyone would think of stealing your idea. Chances are the people in your life would not be that unkind to you. If you feel you can trust the people you are talking to there is still another downside to sharing them.

This is the problem of cynics. There will always be those within a group who, whether or not they hold any actual business knowledge or real understanding of the economy, will try and derail you from doing what you want to do. They are the permanently pessimistic people in this world who can only see the bad things around them.

This in itself can be an advantage, as you may actually learn something from what they have to say. Instead of taking it personally when they try and put your idea down, see if there might be some real truth in their bleak outlook. Then you can adapt your business plan. If all they can do is tell you that you will fail, treat it as a challenge. Prove them wrong, do your very best to succeed.

The worse antagonism you can face is opposition from your own family, from the people you most need to support you. If it is they who are standing in the way of you starting up your own venture then tact and a gentle approach is likely to be needed to help them work through their fears.

There may also be positives that arise from such discussions. There may be people among those you talk to who have entered into similar ventures and failed, who can tell you where they went wrong and what you might need to avoid.

There may be those who have successfully run an at home business, either in the past or currently and who can give you advice on how to get started, how to handle your taxes, or how to handle childcare when you are working. These individuals could supply a variety of tips that could make your life easier.

Only a careful assessment of your company, your knowledge of the people involved and your fears for privacy and scorn can help you decide whether or not it is wise to discuss your business plans. Whatever you decide to do, you need to be prepared for surprising reactions.
