If you are considering a small web business, or even have your online business up and running, it is important that you understand the basics of internet marketing so that you don't make the simple mistakes that can be fatal.
Most people know by now that a serious internet marketing business cannot be approached as hobby, but as an occupation. You can't just take time off any time you feel like it, even though you do work at home. Sure, you can look after the kids when they are ill, and help your partner out now and again, but it's still work and if you want it to be a success your small web business must be looked upon as a full time job.
As I say, most people realize that, and if they don't at first, then they soon do. Did you know that out of every 100 people that start up a home business on the internet, 99 fail? There are number of reasons for that, a major one being a lack of commitment and perseverance because they believed they would 'get rich quick', but another major reason is also a lack of knowledge, followed closely by too much knowledge too quickly: information overload, in other words.
Getting too much information too fast does overload you and you don't know what to do next. Starting a small web business from home involves learning a lot of new skills - acquiring a lot of online applications and learning how to use them. Learning how to start a website, generate traffic to it, get it listed on search engine promote this and promote that, buy this software and learn how to use that script. You probably don't need a fraction of that to successfully run your online business.
Try to do it all at once and it literally overwhelms you and you end up getting absolutely nowhere, except perhaps the mental ward. It's important that you learn the basics first, and then go onto the intermediate stuff before you even think about the more advanced internet marketing techniques. In fact, the vast majority of stuff that the so-called gurus try to sell you is totally unnecessary if all you are doing is selling your own products or services from your own website.
In fact they are generally unnecessary at the best of times, and of the eBooks and software I have purchased, it's the stuff that cost me over $90 that I have used the least! As I learned more, I found I got more use out of the free stuff than I did the information that it cost me a fortune to acquire, and I am sure that you will be the same.
So what are the basics? Here are some that you will need if you want your online business to be successful.
1. A Website:
Most online businesses will prosper from a website. Blogs are fine, but not generally as the basis of a successful online business. Don't get me wrong- many people make a lot of money and run successful businesses from a blog, but you will certainly benefit from a website, particularly if you go on to use a blog to promote it.
2. A Blog
A blog is a great way to promote a business and help get both listed on search engines for all the free traffic that can bring you.
3. Autoresponders
These are necessary in order to handle routine email inquiries, sales of products that can be delivered electronically such as eBooks and software. Autoresponders can take orders, accept payment and deliver the product. They can also send regular emailings to prospects and customers. It's important that you choose the one most appropriate for you.
4. Payment Processor
You will need some means of accepting payments from customers, and also some way for them to order products from your website. There are a number of options, and unless you choose the right ones you could be paying excessive amounts for what you don't need. One is generally not enough to satisfy all your customers.
5. EMail Server
Never use free email addresses for your business. It displays an amateurism that will put a lot of people off buying from you. You will need a professional email system with multiple addresses for various parts of your business.
These are just five very simple things that can make or break your business. Then there is designing your website, learning HTML, graphics software, traffic generation techniques such as article marketing, squeeze pages, email lists and so on. You will have to optimize your website for search engines, so some knowledge of SEO would be useful. A Squidoo lens is a useful promotional application to use in your online business, and then you will have to become familiar with how to use social networking to your advantage.
That's an awful lot to learn for your small web business, and you are advised to find a way of getting that information in small quantities, in the order that you will have to use them as you build up your home business.
Those that fail try to do it all at once. They want everything right away, and end up trying to put it all together at once - a job that will never end, so they lose heart and their business fails along with their dreams. All because they tried to learn too fast! You don't learn to write in a day at school: the teachers show you a little at a time and that's how your should learn how to set up your home business.
Certainly, start off by making some money. That gives you the confidence to carry on. But don't try to go too fast forward. Build your small web business slowly but surely: the tortoise always beats the hare in this game. While you build on a strong foundation, they rush ahead and build on sand. Your business will still be making money when theirs has failed.
