Smart Uses for Smart Cards

Some time ago, identification badges were used to verify the identity of a person. This, however, was not very reliable due to the fact that identification badges can be easily copied or reproduced in order for a person to gain access to a controlled area. Another security measure used to protect places of work and residences were locks and keys, but these can also be easily copied with minimal cost. One of the major problems of residence buildings were former tenants coming back even after they have ended their contracts and gain access to housing units which lead to burglary. A good number of technical knowledge attempted to prevent these problems. Magnetic strips, barcodes, holographic images and other security measures were tried however all these measures for added protection needed a means of control.

These difficulties related to dishonesty and the necessity for securing information brought about the rise of the use of smart cards. These problems compelled a good number of business establishments to utilize smart cards for allowing entry into workplaces and industrial plants. Managing employee attendance and computation of payroll are facilitated using this technology. Inside each smart card is a microchip that contains a fixed identification number, which is an indication of how uncomplicated the smart card technology is. If in case it will be necessary to manage entry to a particular sector within a complex or there is a need to put in additional restrictions that can be controlled by only one person, a memory chip is embedded into the smart cards for this purpose. The large memory capacity of the smart card also allows the storage of a huge amount of data.

There are a good number of cards out in the market depending on the configuration encoded within the memory. Dual frequency cards, holographic images, barcodes, magnetic strips, and laser printing can also be integrated into the smart cards. There are two general types of smart cards: contactless smart cards and contact based smart cards. Secure applications like payment, debit and credit cards and comparable applications use the contact based smart cards. The contactless smart cards, on the other hand, are utilized for applications such access control, residence and workplace entry, management of attendance, parking management and other comparable applications.
