Steel Detailing with Building Codes & Certified Drawings

Many times, steel structure erectors and steel building companies are puzzled about the significance of local building codes and the purpose of shop drawings for their proposed project. The aim of this article is to help answer those queries. Construction permission is normally required before the erection of any steel structure in the intended region or area. An exemption is made for agricultural structures because most of them are in far-flung areas and are outside of the city. It is necessary to check with local authorities to see if a steel structure will be permitted at the proposed site before erection and installation process commences.

Most structural steel detailing companies will advocate minimum specifications as being adequate for local clearances and approvals. This is not always acceptable, and again, you must find out what the correct codes and loads are.

Certified steel shop drawings are sometimes required by local building code office to be submitted in order to get the necessary permissions. Sometimes authorities may require engineer stamped drawings. Engineer stamped drawings and design calculations are available from most steel structure detailers and vendors. A majority of steel detailing providers require an initial deposit before they will complete standard shop drawings for the erection process, however. Steel detailers tend to use CAD technologies to generate steel shop drawings which include the anchor bolt plan with reactions, foundation design, erection sequence and post-tension section detailing required for the steel structure.

These steel shop drawings also include graphics of each connection in the steel structure as well as cross-section diagrams for every component. Honestly, the final responsibility for getting approvals for the steel structure is with you. You must closely examine credentials of the steel detailing company in connection with asking the right questions to the local code authorities. Adhering to these guidelines will help you make the whole steel structure erection and installation process smoother and even more pleasurable.
