What is a T1 Dedicated Line?

T1 lines are a great service alternative for those who need better and faster communication for their working environment.  A T1 dedicated line is a high-speed digital connection capable of transmitting data at a high rate of speed. 

A T1 can be used for voice communications, data communications or both. 

Each T1 consists of 24 channels. These channels are fluid and are used on an as-needed basis.  When a line frees up it can be used by anyone in the system. 

This allows for fewer lines needed for more people.  Average usage indicates that you should allow one T1 circuit for every 50 to 100 users. If your business is telephone intensive or supports a call center you may need to add an additional T1. 

A T1 channels can be all voice, all data or can be engineered to have some dedicated channels for both voice and data.  T1 dedicated lines are specifically for businesses and integrate easily into your telephone system or data network. 

The T1 is brought into the premise on either copper or fiber wires.  It takes only two pair of wires, eliminating the need for extensive trunk wiring on site. The T1 is terminated onto a smart jack in the telephone room where you can connect it to your system.

A T1 is reliable service.  If any problems do occur they can often be cleared remotely. 

To facilitate better service you may opt to use a CSU (customer service unit), which offers loop-back testing capability with the central office.  Some areas require the use of a CSU so be sure to check your local regulations. The T1 can be programmed to carry incoming as well as outgoing calls. 

You can port your main telephone number to the T1 to allow for more simultaneous incoming calls.  Direct inward dial lines (DIDs) can be used on a T1 allowing telephone users to have their own telephone number, which will ring directly at their desk. Both incoming and outgoing calls can be made on the channels of a T1.
