Texting, Contests and Polls – Oh My!

Posted: Jan 19, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

A lot of us use texting to communicate with our family and friends on a regular basis, without realizing that it has the potential to become a powerful business tool. Texting isn't just a social activity anymore. It can be used to grow your business, as well as expand and retain your customer base.

Here are five ways you can make the most of texting as a mobile marketing technique:

• News/updates. The main reason why people use their mobile phones so much is because they're so busy. Let your customers know you appreciate their support by keeping them posted through texts.

• Contests. Run contests wherein participants get discounts or a chance to win prizes when they join by texting their entries. This will allow you to get more opt-ins.

• Perks. If you own a membership website, you can offer additional benefits to members who sign up to receive text updates from you.

• Polls. Announce the polls on your website, Facebook, and/or Twitter, and invite your audience to cast their votes via text. Not only will you be able to obtain feedback from them, you'll also show them that you care.

• Coupons. You can have your texts double as coupons. When a customer comes into your store and shows you your text, give them a discount and another coupon.

Some things to remember:

• If you decide to carry out a mobile marketing campaign on your own, you'll end up spending a lot of time and money. You may want to consider working with a mobile marketing firm that can help you manage your campaign.

• Don't bug your customers or you will lose them. Know which time zones they're in and send them texts during business hours only. Also, keep your messages short and simple, and limit the frequency of your texts to once or twice a week at most.

• Make it absolutely clear to people what they're signing up for. If you will be sending updates about products or offers occasionally, let them know.

• Don't focus on just advertising your business. People are much more likely to help you if you help them first.
