The popularity of Christmas tree decorating in America grew when import goods from Europe started to arrive in the 1870's. In 1880 the popular department store owned by F.W. Woolworth was pleasantly surprised when the first import shipment of German Christmas ornaments was sold within a couple of days. The department store stocked chains of tiny Czechoslovakia beads, silver foil icicles and crinkly of wire tinsel which added sparkle to their Christmas trees. Tin metal Christmas ornaments, cardboard ornaments, and paper decor were popular in the Christmas department of the store until the 1900's. In the middle of the 1900 hundreds Christmas stores were introducing a wider verity of injection molded plastic Christmas decorations. The low cost of injection molding plastics and the high volume of production kept the cost of Christmas ornaments and other Christmas decorations affordable to the American shoppers.
