The Difference Between Hot and Cold Lamination
There are a huge range of reasons why paper and card items may need to be laminated. Whether the items are valuable souvenirs, educational, ornamental or work related, regularly they need to be protected from, heat, humidity or constant handling.
A good way to do that is to laminate the paper or card item. The lamination process coats the card or paper on both sides with a thin plastic film making the item water resistant as well as durable and no longer at the mercy of fingermarks, creases or mud. The lamination process is permanent.
The lamination process can be carried out in two ways, with or without heat.
Heated lamination uses a machine that heats a compartment with rollers. The laminating pouch is fed through the heated rollers ( normally within a carrier ) with the document within. The pouch is activated by the heat to attach itself to the document and make a waterproof seal all around it.
After a very short cooling period the document can be employed.
Cold lamination uses pouches the same as heated lamination. But these have an adhesive that is turned on by force on the document to make the seal all around.
The cold laminators usually do not use electricity and are more safe to use as they do not get hot.
Both types of lamination have glossy and matt pouches available, and in a number of sizes.
Cold laminators are a better choice if very fragile documents are being laminated and they might be delicate to or damaged by heat.
Heated laminators are extraordinarily quick and efficient for a wide selection of applications, but can't be used for extended amounts of time as the get very hot and can overheat.
There are advantages and disadvantages to each of the lamination types. Selecting the best is simply the best fit for your requirements and situation.
