The Many Uses Of Rare Earth Magnets

Posted: Dec 13, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Rare earth magnets are a class of elemental compounds that possess an unusually powerful magnetic force. Typical, everyday refrigerator magnets exhibit a force between one and one half teslas (a tesla is the unit of measurement for magnets). Rare earth compound can produce forces beyond one and a half teslas. For this reason, they are exceptionally useful in certain capacities. However, by themselves, these magnets are fine, brittle and corrode easily. Because of this, rare earth magnets are often coated with another material to protect them from breaking. These magnets rare earth has provided are not actually rare in the traditional sense of the word.

The name may seem deceptive since the compounds are as common as lead and tin. However, the name is meant to refer to the rareness of the powerful magnetic field and not its value of worth or preciousness—gold is being truly rare in nature. In the early to mid—1960s, scientists began to see the value of these metals. Once they were able to pair lanthanides with compounds of iron, resulting in a higher Curie temperature (the heat at which the compound is magnetic), rare earth magnets became a popular substance to use as permanent magnets.

The twist, and few people are aware of this, is that magnetism is to be credited for more than ninety percent of the working engines in the world. Magnetism is found in car engines, televisions, DC motors, vending machines, modems, computers welding machines, and an endless number of other engine and motor components. The greater the magnetism is, the more effective the motor will be. Since magnets rare earth created, display powerful magnetic force, they have led the way to opening many other engine options.

Most importantly, magnets are used as the driving force behind computer technology. Every hard drive has a recognizable, banana-shaped rare earth magnet in it that is integral to the function of the computer. While the concepts behind the magnet are unimportant to most individuals, the fact that they are there goes to show the importance of efficient magnetic field devices. Yet, for most people, magnets are nothing more than devices with which to pin documents to the refrigerator.

Fortunately, this is an acceptable use, even for magnets rare earth compounded to form. Many people enjoy playing with them; consider levitating object magic tricks and magnet spheres. The only important consideration will be to remember that unless the magnets are made for entertainment, the protective coating on them that prevents corrosion will be thin and will easily chip. The strength of rare earth compounds can make it difficult to enjoy the force of attraction the magnets have to each other without causing the protective outer cover to fragment, and while these magnets are not excessively pricy; they are not cheap either, selling for roughly twenty dollars an ounce.

Common modern uses for these super strong magnets include hard drives, speakers and headphones, magnet motors for cordless tools and electric guitar pickups. The great advantage of these magnets for industrial purposes is that they are strongly magnetized in one direction.

Rare earth elements are used with other materials like iron to create powerful magnets. The name of the magnet often refers to the material used, such as neodymium magnets. What makes these magnets special is their amazingly strong magnetic field. It surpasses most magnets that we typically use on a daily basis, like refrigerator magnets. Unlike other magnets that will eventually lose their magnetic field, magnets rare earth do not unless subjected to very high temperatures.

Magnets rare earth are permanent magnets composed from alloys of rare earth elements. Rare earth elements are seventeen chemical elements in the periodic table, primarily the lanthanide series and two, which are remotely similar. Rare earth magnets are considered to be the strongest permanent magnets available, due to their extraordinarily high tesla level, which averages at about 1.4.

When it comes to making magnets rare earth provides the strongest materials. These materials outperform all others in every aspect of magnet strength. They are made from elements that are not actually rare. In fact, some of them are quite plentiful.

The key reason why some firms thrive while some implode during an financial recession is still a puzzle to many people business-owning business owners. Some wrongly assume that all businesses should suffer via recessionary cycles. But the truth is that some companies are usually essentially recession-proof, and it is not necessarily because they are much larger, better known, or a lot more generously capitalized.

These superior magnetic objects are traditionally called rare earth magnets, a terminology that by now has become a misnomer. The neodymium kind, for example, is widely available and mass produced in many countries of the world. Although the samarium-cobalt variety is far superior, it is not as readily available and hence more expensive to procure. The scientific explanation for the sheer magnetic force of both kinds is their electron charge, which can only be enhanced by their concave form.

Steel balls are used for such a wide range of uses; it is almost difficult to believe. Such apparently unrelated designs as jewelry, electric guitars, autos, historic cannons and spray paint all make use of the same essential components. It is fascination to see the commonality in parts between such different machines, and it is also a testament to the versatility and importance of steel balls.

Ferro fluid is an interesting substance that is used for both practical and fun purposes. Aside from electronics and art, the substance is also a fun classroom tool that helps grade school children learn about magnets. In addition, with the flexibility of this substance, more practical applications for it are bound to be discovered in the future.

Ferrofluid is a stable liquid that contains miniscule magnetic pieces. Iron, magnetite, and cobalt are some of the most common metals. It is vital that these metals are small so they remain in the liquid form when exposed to a magnetic element.

Rare earth magnets are well known for producing magnetic fields that enhance health and healing. These fields produce negative ions that penetrate a person's body and bloodstream interacting with your body's natural metabolic functions to reduce pain. Consistent use of magnetic jewelry can sustain physical health long term, by bringing a healing touch to chronic aches and pains to help you feel better.
