The Speed of Touch

There is an overwhelming market for touch technology. With the popularity of all things “touch” in our lives from ATM’s to iPhones, the community it touch driven.
Previously, resistive touch technology, found in grocery check out counters, post offices and other products was the common touch technology. Now, capacitive technology, once considered far too expensive for products is now more affordable and highly sought after.

iPhone’s almost overnight popularity brought with it the attraction and the introduction of the capacitance touch technology. Increased factory orders and awareness has begun to drive the cost of capacitive sensors down, which increases the likely hood that more and more products will be created with capacitive touch technology.

Capacitive touch technology is also a more durable product compared to other forms of touch technology. Just a couple reasons here:

  • Capacitive is resistive to noise, humidity and moisture and changing conditions

  • Mechanical buttons can be kept or replaced

  • The touch sensor can be mounted directly behind mechanical buttons

  • The hidden touch sensor is able to sense through the buttons and detect finger presence

Besides all of the time saved using touch screens, there are so many other reasons touch technology is booming:

  • Eliminates the computer mouse, which removes a lot of chronic injuries

  • Reduces paper use, like checks at the grocery counter

  • Some are so compact and simple to use

  • Efficient and fast

  • Instant database storage capabilities for compiling information

Try naming all of the things in your life that you touch in order to complete an action? We could be here all day as you add each thing up in your mind. From phones, to the grocery check out to the airport parking garage, the world revolves around touch. There are several types of technology that make touch functions happen, but when did these new touch technologies become so common? Just like all the other functions we perform throughout our day, we wonder what we ever did with out them.
