Tips For Setting Business Goals

Posted: Jan 31, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

No business can expect to achieve and maintain success without effective goal setting. Sure some may get lucky for a short period of time however in order to enable your organization to really reach it's full potential and enjoy long term growth and success it requires goal setting and knowing how to work those goals for the maximum results.

Effective goal setting requires setting time specific and measurable goals. 'Making a lot of money' is not a measurable or specific goal, and without specifics really does not have the power or enable a tangible structure to be created to achieve what you want. What is a lot of money to you, and when do you want to achieve this by? It doesn't matter whether it is hitting $100,000 in revenues in one month or $1,000,000 or even $10,000,000 in one year but it needs to be specific and written down with a date you commit to achieving it by.

However where many business owners go wrong is not starting their planning with their end goals in mind. Just setting goals for the next several months or current year is not enough, what are your ultimate goals for your business? If you do not start here, you risk building a business model that is restricted to achieving only the goals you have set and not what you really desire and need. Every step and task that is done on a daily basis by everyone in your organization must be in line with your end goals and if they do not know what those are, how can they be achieved?

You should not hold back when drafting your ultimate goals. If becoming the leading company in your industry is really important then as the folks at Nike say, 'Just do it.' If your goals is to use your business to land you on the top of the Forbes list of the world's richest then define how much that means and work towards it.

To some, writing a goal of $40 billion dollars may sound unrealistic. Without a plan it may be, but with the right plan there isn't anything that cannot be achieved.

In order to realize these goals you must break them into actionable steps. This includes annual, quarterly, monthly and even bite sized daily actions and goals that are easily achievable and doable. Back out from your ultimate goals and break them down so you know exactly what you must do each day to achieve success.

Setting goals is crucial to your success, but setting them alone will not put results in your hands. You must work those goals on a daily basis. They should be the first thing you read every morning and the last thing every night. You must evaluate progress towards your goals regularly to keep yourself and your organization on track and moving in the right direction.

A big part of this is also getting your entire company united behind your goals. You may be dedicated to your goals and business vision, but you will not likely be the only one involved in making them happen. You must inspire and enroll all members of your business in working towards your goals everyday. With this in mind you will find it much easier to keep up employee motivation and propel your enterprise towards your goals by making a conscious effort to show appreciation and reward employees for their progress and achievement of milestones. So set your goals, work them and win!
