The word Permaculture comes from the combination of permanent agriculture and permanent culture. Permaculture is actually an approach in designing human settlement and perennial agri systems that copies relationships found in the natural ecologies. It is a design system for sustainable living and in all aspect of human endeavor. It is a unique green career.

The career outlook for a permaculture career is favorable. They make on average $20-$25 thousand a year.

Permaculturists are people who teach us how we can construct natural homes, raise our own food, and restore ecosystems and landscapes, catch rainwater and many more. Permaculture, being a broad-based and holistic approach, has many applications to all aspects of life. The core of permaculturists should be set on 'values' or ethics that shall remain constant whatever the situation is.

Professional and Personal Qualities of a Permaculturist

A permaculturist should have Earthcare and recognize that the Earth is the source of all life, our valuable home, and that we are a part of it, not apart from it. They should also have people care and support and help each other to change the way of living to that not harmful to ourselves or the planet. And finally, people wanting to become permaculturists should always consider Fair share and ensure that the Earth's limited resources are being used in equitable and wise ways. Basically, this is what makes permaculture a green career.

Modern permaculture began with the concern on sustainable food production. What started it was the belief that for people to have sustainable living, they should avoid dependence on industrialized agriculture, which uses technologies powered by fossil fuels. Permaculture emphasizes the value of low inputs and diverse crops. A good model for this is the home gardens for food production and the abundance of small-scale market.

Permaculture Trainings

Permaculture can be a great career choice for people in rural areas where there are plenty of space and land to put the knowledge and training in good use as well as for people who are interested in sustainable development work or even for people who simple wants to lessen their ecological impact. You can simply join a workshop that will teach you the basics principles of permaculture as well as provide you with innovations in the field such as designing a small solar electric system or a bicycle powered pump. Trainings may also include topics on Methane Biodigestors and the Introduction to Permaculture.

A study was conducted to assess the extent of organic farming as a low-input agriculture technology in Malawi. The study was done using key-informant interviews and internet search. Many of the key-informants interviewed said that use of external inputs in agriculture has its problems, like groundwater contamination and environmental degradation through use of agrichemicals. Few farmers in Malawi practice organic farming as a strategy for low input agriculture and most of them said their produce does not have a ready market. However, agriculture experts outlined several low-input agriculture technologies that organic farmers engage in, in crop production. Many subsistence farmers practice low input agriculture, which does not involve external inputs or the principles of organic farming, due to factors like unaffordability of external inputs, lack of knowledge of organic farming and other factors like gender and HIV and AIDS which affects farm labour.
