Many people love the idea of starting their own small business, especially if they are facing difficult economic times or problems at work. There are many potential benefits to going into business for yourself, and the financial rewards can be very great in the long run. However, many people overlook the drawbacks, especially how difficult it can be during the initial months (or even the first few years). The simple reality is that starting a business can be an extremely difficult experience, yet also yield incredible dividends over the long term. Not all of these are financial, some of these are emotional or time related, and its good to understand these in a general way.

Many new businesses do not see any profit during the first few years. This can make things quite difficult, and it requires a great amount of dedication and sacrifice to see the long-term vision realized.

One option that many people forget or are not aware of is the possibility of starting a business part time. This works quite well if you're interested in a service-oriented business, such as tutoring students. You can slowly build up your business and reputation on the side while working at your full-time job simultaneously. This can make a world of difference, since you still have your main salary to rely on if things don't work out with the tutoring business.

As we mentioned earlier, often times a business simply needs time to mature. You may have a great idea and business plan, but it can take a while for word-of-mouth to travel and for you to build up a reputation in your field. Once you have a certain number of clients, it may become much more realistic to give up your job and devote all your energies to your new business.

As you can see, you can be quite creative and think of a number of various ways to start a business. Even so, owning a small venture is not for every person, and you may find that you simply do not have the skills necessary to work without supervision. Or you may simply find that you do not like all of the tasks you have to do such as bookkeeping, marketing, or other activities that you wouldn't have to worry about as an employee. For this reason, you must be sure to thoroughly research the requirements for small business before jumping in.
