Why Hiring Different Sized Vans for Different Needs Makes Sense

Posted: Apr 08, 2011 |
Because there are all different sorts of loads being carried across the UK, vehicle manufacturers carry a large selection of vans. Hiring different sized vans for your various needs just makes sense, since the price, efficiency and ease of handling is largely dependent on the size of the vehicle.

What Are the Different Sizes?
Small vans are a popular option for contractors (with more cargo room and less seating) or cab companies (with average cargo room and more seating options). Popular makes include the Volkswagen Caddy, the Vauxhall Combo or the Peugeot Partner. With a little over one meter square of load height and width, you can often fit items that are almost two meters long into a small van.

A medium sized van is another option for both contractors and cab drivers. It offers much more space, including a load volume of around 6.5 m3. Ford and Mercedes-Benz have offerings in this size with the Transit and Vito, respectively. Volkswagen also offers a medium van with the Transporter.

Large and extra large vans have a similar body shape as the medium sized vans, but often come with a high roof that more than doubles the load volume. The Ford Transit Jumbo and the Renault Master LWB are both popular large models, while the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter is an excellent choice in the extra large category.

The Advantages of One over the Other
Aside from the obvious benefit of carrying larger items in the larger vehicles, there are other differences that you will need to consider before hiring different sized vans. Fuel economy and handling are the two major factors and depending on the type of driving being done, these factors may weigh in heavily.

When driving on motorways the fuel economy can have a significant effect on the overall cost of your van hire. Smaller vans have a better level of fuel economy - sometimes as much as twice the rate of the extra large vans. What that means is that if you do not need the room, opting for a smaller van can be most cost effective.

Handling may be more of an issue in the city, where parking and tight streets can make a smaller van a better idea. But you also need to be sure that your entire load is packed up tight against the wind and rain which can happen at any time, anywhere. If your equipment, supplies or other valuables are exposed to the weather damage can easily occur, making the ease of handling and cost savings from a better fuel economy seem worthless.
