The first day in the first job is tougher than the quest of job-hunting. Depending on the nature of the job that you are about to have, the level of anxiety also depends. If the job that you will have is in line with the field that you studied in college, well of course, I am sure that you are confident enough to face anything. But for those who were not able study or finish college but were lucky enough to enter the corporate world, it is really nerve-wracking. However, you may have or have not finished college, it is really unpreventable that problems do exist that may worry you. Here, I want you to be aware of the problems that you may encounter in your first job. And as an extra in this article, I want to give you some tips on how to deal with them.
First, you might be concerned of what you are going to do on your first day. I totally understand that anxiety. You cannot lay your hands on your job proper on the first day of your work. Employers usually conduct orientations and trainings that may last for several weeks depending on your position and the industry of the company. You should be oriented with the rules and regulations, your job description and responsibilities, about the company, and your salary. You must also be strolled around the building for you to know the whereabouts - the manager's office, the bathroom, the fire alarm, and the emergency exit for your safety in cases of disasters. If you have any questions, I suggest that you should not hesitate to ask. Make things as clearly as possible to avoid future confusions.
"My co-workers might not like me" is your next concern. Who cares anyway? You are working for the company, not for them. And the only person you prioritize to impress is your boss. That is a little bit apathetic though. Somehow, you also want to have somebody in the office to be your friend or somebody that you want to get along with. It is such a lonely world if you don't have any friend at work. I bet you will not stay long in this company if this is the atmosphere you are at. Well, try to establish rapport. Start saying "hi" with a big, friendly smile in your face and start talking something like "I like the color of your shirt, they look perfect on you". But what you get is just a frown. Not effective, huh? Well, don't loose hope. That can just be a natural response of those who are having a hard time at work most especially if they are working on a close deadline. Just keep on sharing your smile to everyone everyday. You will eventually win a smile back. And maybe, small gifts may help.
