Booking conference venues in Plymouth – Holiday Inn

Posted: Apr 29, 2010 |

Located adjacent to the famous Plymouth Hoe, and surrounded by the city's most famous landmarks, we at Holiday Inn Plymouth are the ideal venue for private parties, business conferences and local community events. We pride ourselves on being one of the most central conference venues in Plymouth, with an enviable selection of conference rooms seating 6 to 450 occupants.

With an ongoing program of urban development, a large number of established companies and a year-round calendar of community events, it is little wonder that conference venues here are so in demand. Bombed badly during the war, Plymouth rebuilt itself once and is doing so again. While sites like the historic Pannier Market have been given heritage status, ugly post-war buildings have been torn down – replaced by the retail outlets of the Drake Circus Shopping Centre. One of the first cities to trial the government's Business Improvement District initiative, Plymouth's retail footprint is one of the top 5 in the south west.

The ambitious Vision For Plymouth urban development program will create even more opportunities - but Plymouth is no concrete jungle. A maritime city steeped in nautical tradition, it continues to be dominated by its most famous son, Sir Francis Drake. He still stands proudly overlooking the Hoe, not far from us at Holiday Inn Plymouth.

Long an important centre for the armed forces, from the 1980s Plymouth's military workforce began to decline in number. However, 12,000 people are still employed by the navy, with a further 7,500 in the other armed forces. Warships constantly move in and out of port, and submarines rest at Devonport Dockyard. The largest naval base in Western Europe, and the only one in the UK to refit nuclear submarines, it employs 10% of Plymouth's workforce. 12,000 are employed by the Navy in total.

The city is the largest marine employer in the south west, with at least 270 firms in the nautical sector and a healthy fishing fleet. Plymouth University is another large employer, with around 3000 staff. The Tamar Science Park has 50 companies on site, and is the UK's fastest growing science park. The Plymouth Gin Distillery, established in 1793, is the city's oldest employer.

If you book conference rooms in Plymouth with us, you're near all the main civic attractions. The long promenade serves as a spectacular parade ground, with the Navy, Marines and Army all putting on displays. There is an annual 2-day firework championship, and the Fastnet Yacht Race also finishes here. Both attract thousands of visitors.

By planning your meeting with us at Holiday Inn, Plymouth you are a short walk from the 17th century Citadel, with its fantastic views across the Sound towards Drakes Island. Smeaton's Tower - part of the famous Eddystone Lighthouse – overlooks the restored 1930s Tinside lido, the outdoor alternative to our own heated pool. The Marine Biological Laboratory and Royal Corinthian Yacht Club are close by.

When it comes to conference rooms in Plymouth, we at Holiday Inn Plymouth are ideally sited for delegates from across Britain and Europe. Combining the facilities of a top business centre with the comforts of a luxury hotel, we guarantee success.
