Gallup-Ing Into The Future
DETERMINING SEEMING TRENDS
Jack Welch observed that "when the rate of change outside the organization is greater than the rate of change inside the organization, we are looking at the beginning of the end." To get a better grip on change, ask yourself and colleagues these questions.
What changes are occurring outside?
What evidence do you have of those changes are taking place?
What accommodations are you making in reference to them?
How adaptive is your organization?
How are projections currently being made?
What are futurists saying?
What global trends will impact the way we currently do business?
Are we so busy fighting fires that we cannot hear alarm bells ringing?
PROJECTING BASED ON THE GALLUP REPORT
In the GALLUP Management Journal (October, 2007) a report appeared on global migration patterns and job creation by Jim Clifton, Gallup's Chairman and CEO. Among the numerous insights their research yielded was a reality that contradicted the projections of the world's leading economists. A quarter of a century earlier, nearly all of them had predicted that America would lose its first-place position in the ranking of Gross Domestic Products (GDP).
Japan, the economists said, would come in first with $5 trillion, Germany second with $4 trillion, and the United States third, with $3.5 trillion. They were all wrong - by $10 trillion. The reason for America's retention of its first-place position with a GDP of $13 trillion? The under-estimatation of the role innovation and entrepreneurship would play in America's future.
Clifton is quick to point out that "creativity" and "innovation" are not one and the same. Of the two, it is innovation that will help business thrive in the future. It is innovation that brings ideas to life. And, while "entrepreneurship" may seem antithetical to a corporate environment, its twin--"intrapreneurship"--gives employees the freedom to act in empowered ways that best serve the organization. It is altogether possible to have entrepreneurs working within the organization.
What's required are leaders who produce an environment that encourages innovation and creativity.
