Home deliveries surging as people turn their backs on the cold weather

Online sales in the UK now account for more than 10 per cent of all retail sales, according to recent findings by the Government's official number-crunchers, the Office of National Statistics. Its latest research shows that the proportion of sales accounted for by online businesses has risen by a third in just a year – that means that sales over the internet are growing ten times faster than those in the shops.

Many new and exciting businesses are reaping the benefits from this change in our habits, and among them are the UK couriers and next-day delivery specialists who ensure that all these goods reach their intended destination. They are now very important ‘middlemen' for many businesses. And because these firms never actually see their customers, the home delivery companies have become the public face of the new type of shopping. That is why so much money is being invested, around the world, so that these busy businesses can meet the demand for their services which has arisen out of our new love of online shopping.

And it means that, just as the internet has meant that competition lets us compare the prices of the actual goods we buy, and find the best deal, the same also applies to those who arrange and carry out the home delivery which is so vital to this new generation of virtual shoppers. When the weather deteriorated across northern Europe at the start of December 2010, a surge was immediately reported in online shopping. People are really embracing the fact that they can buy pretty much anything they want in warmth and comfort at home or work, and then just sit back and wait for it to be delivered by a reliable and prompt home delivery company.

Of course, there is still a sense of occasion which applies when we go Christmas shopping – the lights, the decorations and the exciting and innovative new continental-style markets which have sprung up widely help keep that alive. But when faced with a choice between having to wrap up warmly and do battle with the crowds on the local high street, or sitting down with a cuppa at home and ordering goods online for home delivery, for a rapidly growing proportion of people, the choice is clear. While for many people, shopping is seen as a leisure pursuit, for growing numbers, it is a job to be got out of the way so that they can then spend their time on more exciting and interesting things.

Arranging a home delivery online is so easy, and it can represent great value for money thanks to the intensity of the competition between the courier companies which are all vying for our custom.
