Management of loads key to sustainable future for international delivery
One of the current buzz words in the freight and parcel delivery sector is ‘sustainability', and international courier companies are especially keen to be seen as taking the lead in reducing the impact of all their vehicles' movements on the environment. They feel this responsibility especially because their large juggernauts are a familiar sight as they are driven along our roads.
And while the job they do is undoubtedly vital to the economy of the country, the fact that the trucks are so visible makes them an easy target whenever discussions about sustainability and reducing greenhouse gases are had. Deutsche Post DHL, one of the biggest players in the field, has just published details of its own study into the changes likely to be brought about in the logistics industry as it aims to increase its sustainability.
The worldwide delivery company's CEO, Frank Appel, says there is greater demand from customers for greener methods of transporting all types of goods, and that his company's study aims to show how it can meet the ambitious greenhouse gas reduction targets which it has set itself. The company has targeted a 30 per cent reduction in its CO2 emissions by 2020, from their 2007 level. It is not alone in targeting such ambitious cuts, as Parcelforce too has a similar long-term plan.
The study says that the freight and logistics sector will be an essential leader in pursuing substantial cuts in emissions levels, which it can do by managing both the capacities and routes of its vehicles much more effectively. There is a major incentive on the horizon for the big players in worldwide freight to reduce their CO2, in the form of likely methods of charging companies for the levels of CO2 which their activities produce.
Once delivery companies have a monetary value attached to their carbon emissions, Appel says, every decision taken over routes and services will need to consider it likely impact on the environment. Using these methods, it is clear that the prices of many goods which are sent long distances by worldwide shipping are likely to face upward pressure.
But in a trading environment where public spending cuts are looming large, wholesalers, retailers, and the worldwide delivery companies which supply them, such as DHL, will do everything they can to absorb those costs, so that they can hold onto their business, while at the same time being seen to take positive steps to reduce their impact on the environment.
Parcel delivery companies are trying to make every delivery as efficient as possible, and this benefits all customers, who can get a high level of service from the sector's leaders, such as Fedex.
