Professionals as foster carers
We are currently recruiting fostercare workers in all areas in the South East of England. There is a huge need for foster carers in all areas of the country, and the response recently has been very good. There are many professionals currently out of work or living with the threat of redundancy who are seeking alternative employment opportunities and they see that foster caring might be a way forward for them.
There are several stages involved in becoming a foster carer and not all applicants get through. As a general guide, we tend to register about one in every 20 applicants, which is just 5%. We are specifically looking for people with experience of child care, not only experience gained from looking after their own children, but also from paid employment, possibly in children's homes, as a child minder, in schools, youth or health services. People who are qualified as social workers would also be prime candidates for foster caring. Social workers or other professionals who may have been working in their field for many years and want a new challenge or a change of lifestyle are more than welcome to apply to become foster carers and would have many of the skills required. Social workers also know " the system" and so would have a head start on many of the competences required of fostercare workers. They would be highly suitable for caring for mothers and babies who need short term assessment placements in the family setting. These sorts of placements need carers with a professional approach who can observe, monitor and record how a mother is coping with her child.
The monetary compensation for fostering is on a par with many professions, particularly if applicants have sufficient space in their homes to take a large sibling groups, as foster carers are paid a fee per child. Fostering has the added advantage of the fact that it is home-based and avoids such things as the daily commute, office politics, pressure of workloads etc all of which can contribute to social workers becoming "burnt out". Foster caring is also extremely rewarding as a career, and many professionals who come in to it feel they can make more of a difference this way than they ever did behind their computers in an office. Most social workers want to make a difference to children's lives, but this often gets lost in the world of local authority social work with its emphasis on targets, paperwork and bureaucracy.
More and more we see foster carers as part of the professional network surrounding a child in the care system and those from a professional background whatever that may be, could have something valuable to offer. In turn would get something back from the experience, not only financially but also in terms of job satisfaction.
