The power of social media revolves around word of mouth. We have learned that in any attempt to achieve successful word of mouth marketing, you need to win over the leaders of a community. These leaders are the early adopters and more importantly the most influential voice your brand can gain.

What is an influencer?

An influencer is someone who is considered an expert when it comes to anything and everything related to your market.  This person is extremely influential when it comes to products.  People actually depend on these influencers for many of their purchasing decisions.

Why do I need the influencer?

It is extremely important to win over the influencer or influencers for several reasons.  They will help drive your word-of-mouth campaign on and off of Social Media.  Everything they say about your company will be taken to heart and repeated by all of their loyal followers, which is why you want to be on their good side.  They will also help build brand loyalty and trust for you among existing and potential customers.  If they are standing up for your brand it is more than likely all of their followers will be doing the same.  Think of it as adding a general to your team instead of just one soldier.

How do I find the influencer?

The influencer is ideally the same person as your average customer.  Use the research you already have to get an idea of who you are looking for.  You want to be keeping an eye on the all of the recent content that is being published that is relevant to your product.  You should be watching across Social Media, the internet, and even in print to identify who is writing the most popular articles and blogs related to your market.

How Do I win Them Over?

Once you start finding the influencers you want to target, start interacting.  You can do this through on all Social Media channels by linking to them, re-tweeting, @ tagging, etc.  Interacting with the influencers will not only put you on their radar, but build trust with them as well.  If your company shows them respect as a leading voice in the market they will start to develop trust with your brand.
