The nearly unlimited plethora of home-based programs available on the internet leaves your average person feeling stranded. How does someone decipher them to pick the one that is authentic, affordable and easy to use? Here are some basic characteristics to search for that can help you avoid walking into a scam.
1) Avoid ads that fail to mention the name of the program. This tactic is used to prevent newbies like you from searching the web for feedback from veterans. Often times, that means there might be some dirt the salesman might want to hide.
2) Make sure the program offers equal opportunities to all. Some systems, like pyramids, are structured in a way that prevents you from obtaining the wealth of those that started before you. It’s not very encouraging to know that some “fat cat” at the top of the mountain is raking in all of the cash you’ll never see.
3) Do not fear repeating patterns. A program is not necessarily a scam just because each person must accomplish the same task in order to get paid. Simplicity is a good thing. If the type of business opportunity you have in mind is complex with employees, equipment and inventory, then you will be paying a lot more out of your pocket for the start-up costs.
4) Understand that home-based businesses are not the same as job applications. Turning in your resume to work for someone else requires less effort than starting a business at home. If you want to be your own boss, you will have to invest time and money.
5) Do your homework. Ask questions. Find out how much money and/or equipment you will need to begin. If they say their company has been around for 8 years and their domain name has only been registered for 3, then there’s a clue. If they claim the income is considered a gift and is tax-free, then ask your CPA to confirm it. Try asking for referrals and see if anyone is willing to confirm the success of the business. And most importantly, don’t spend money you don’t have so you can rely on hypothetical income.
6) Learn to recognize the facts from the fiction. There is no program will a success rate of 100 percent. As a result you will probably find at least one blog or review somewhere on the internet with negative feedback. Before you hold that against the business, make sure the review has facts instead of useless ranting. Treat each program with the same rationality that a jury should treat the accused.
These basic methods have worked great for myself and many of the individuals I’ve taught them to. They are a great balance between the ignorance of making assumptions and the paranoia of declaring everything to be corrupt. If you can cautiously move forward then you will likely find a business opportunity that meets your taste and budget.
