Ibiza Jobs, Moving here and working on the Island
Being a tourist area, there is a large demand for temporary summer workers in Ibiza. These type of jobs are mainly in bars, restaurants, cafes and club promotions - often paying low wages for long hours. However, the perks of living in sunny Ibiza, a fun lifestyle and discount club tickets still draw many English people over to work every summer.
It is easier to find work if you have a basic knowledge of Spanish, but it is not essential for bars in San Antonio, for example. For employment in non-tourist industries, the importance of speaking Spanish is obviously much greater.
If you are looking for a summer job, start searching before May for the widest choice. Most people find it easier to actually be in Ibiza when searching for employment, as you can look out for local adverts and visit places in person to enquire about vacancies. The Ship Inn in San Antonio has a popular notice-board displaying local job vacancies, as well as local newspapers. There are also many websites that advertise jobs in Ibiza – a few I have seen are:
To be legally employed in Spain you will need a national insurance number, known as an NIE. For more details on this, see the section on residency. Ensure you have a contract for a minimum of six months, which will entitle you to Spanish health care and its social security system.
If you continue to work for a UK employer while living in Spain for less than one year, you continue to pay your national insurance contributions to the UK. For longer than a year, you would pay to the Spanish social security system. Residents are liable to pay taxes on any income that is earned in Spain through employment or property – the double taxation agreement between the UK and Spain ensures that you are not taxed twice for the same income.
If you plan to be self-employed in Ibiza, you must apply for all the required documentation. Registering will entitle you to social security and eligibility for a pension when you retire. Many English people set up business offering services targeted at other ex-pats, such as building work, mechanics and hairdressers.
If you are a pensioner, you should be entitled to your British state pension while in Spain. According to the British Embassy, some UK benefits such as Disability allowance may be transferrable to Spain in the short term, although you would need to investigate this further.
It may take a few weeks to find a job so make sure you have enough money to live on in the short term. While you are unemployed, you will not be entitled to Spanish benefits unless you have contributed to their social security system.
Permanent Employment
I have many requests for information about all year round jobs in Ibiza. The fact is, the tourist season in Ibiza only runs from April to October and during the winter period the majority of tourist related businesses are closed.
If you are lucky, you may be able to find a job teaching English as a foreign language or as a cleaner/maid in private homes. However, many struggle to find employment on the same career level as they were employed in the UK - be aware that wages in Spain are much lower and fluent Spanish is essential. Working hours also differ from the UK due to the tradition of a long lunch break in Spain, meaning that your overall day could run from 8am to 8pm.
