The National Archives has released an IT Tender for an Audiovisual Archive Management Solution(AVAMS).The National Archives is seeking to engage a suitably qualified organisation to undertake the supply, installation and commissioning of computer software for an Audiovisual Archive Management System (AVAMS). It is anticipated that the software products offered will be delivered in conjunction with a range of services and other deliverables. These will all combine to form the entirety of the AVAMS Solution.
The National Archives undertakes to manage, preserve and make accessible the archives of the Australian government. This includes approximately 600,000 audiovisual assets in a variety of formats, comprised of motion picture films, videos, audio recordings and digital formats created by Australian Government broadcasting authorities and other government agencies.
The Archives continues to explore ways in which it can use Web 2.0 technologies to build and engage audiences with its collection and other services. Initiatives undertaken included publication of images from the Archives' collection on the photo-sharing site, Flickr, and videos on Vimeo.
The Archives' website (naa.gov.au ) continues to be the primary means by which researchers accessed the Archives' collection and services. In 2009–10, the Archives experienced a significant growth in the number of unique visits to all its websites.
The Archives also continue as an extensive digitisation program focused on high-value, high-use or at-risk records including a range of Cabinet, immigration and defence service records. The Archives' state and territory offices focus on digitising high-use records and records of significance to their local communities. Digitised records, including photographs, are all available from the Archives' website at no cost.
Increasing the number of digitised records increases researchers' ability to access the Archives' collection online. In June 2010, following a review undertaken in consultation with public, agency and staff users, the Archives released an enhanced version of its online database RecordSearch, providing researchers with additional search options. These options help users refine access searches, thereby making it easier to locate records, even as the number of records on the database expands.
The National Archives requires the AVAMS Solution to support its audiovisual archives management functions. These functions include:
: transfer (acquisition) and cataloguing of physical and digital audiovisual materials from Commonwealth agencies
: storage, movement, preservation, copying and access to these audiovisual assets.
