Once relegated to the smallest area of the shelf, mens fragrances are front and center today. Few men consider themselves fully dressed without their cologne. A man’s personal fragrance has become as much a trademark as their haircut or style of dress. With all this focus upon scent, how is a man supposed to know what to wear?
Start with what you like. If it’s a woodsy scent, odds are you are going to want to buy one that smells similar. Stay away from floral fragrances, they are designed for women. Barring that, remember that just because something smells great on your best friend, there is no guarantee that it will smell good on you. Everyone has different body chemistry, and what smells pleasant on one fellow will smell like week old gym socks on another. The only way to find out what smells good on you is to try it.
Go to the local department store and find their men’s cologne counter. Let the salesclerk know what you like in a scent – clean, musky, fresh, woody – and let them guide you toward a number of fragrances. Don’t apply the fragrance to your wrist, spray it on a card. Give the scent some time to develop, at least thirty minutes, so all the notes of the cologne mature and you can smell them clearly. It is the later scents, the medium and high notes, which stay with you throughout the day.
If you need to, come back a few times. Ask to take home samples so you can spend a day with one scent at a time and see if you still like it after several hours. Once you have found a scent that you enjoy, you are likely to spend years wearing it; so, take the time to get something worth while. Remember to search online outlets for your new cologne. Odds are you will find better prices than at the local store.
