Starting a Window Washing Business

One great niche of the cleaning service industry is window cleaning. Yes, you’ll be surprised at how many people want you to clean their windows. You’ll also be surprised at the sheer number of windows each house has. So even if you charge a minimal price per window, there’s enough room there to give you a tidy profit margin.

If you love to work outdoors and don’t want to be cooped up cleaning a house on a sunny day, are reasonably athletic, then this might be the perfect job and business for you.

Cleaning a window might seem easy, but if it was, why would people pay you to do it? It’s a hard job, and time-consuming but the rewards of setting up a window-cleaning business are plentiful. If you already own or are planning to start a cleaning service, then you may include window washing as part of your services. This can go a long way to earning extra cash for your business and is a great way to expand your part-time or full-time business.

Here are some great tips when starting a window washing business:

·        Learn the tips and tricks of window washing – with windows, the results are immediate. Your clients will be able to see if you’ve done a good job. Investing in a good squeegue and glass cleaning solvents can be one of the ways for you to show your clients that you are serious about the job. Extension handles (or an old broomstick with the head cut off) usually fit easily into squeegees so you can reach those hard to reach places.

·        Ensure your safety. Invest in a good steady ladder. You may look a little weird, but wear protective gear.  You wouldn’t want to get that might cause you grief in the future.

·        Check out where you can clean - Like all cleaning services, there are several ways to tackle this business. You can begin by washing windows in your area, near your neighborhood or in the neighborhood itself. Offer your services to small offices—most big office buildings already have long time cleaning contracts. You can offer your services to local businesses in your community.

·        Know the prices – If there are other window washing businesses in the area, know how much their services cost. You can estimate your potential costs and profit from there and know how much you can charge your clients as well.

·        Don’t be afraid to offer your services to everyone – A cool professional approach to any clients will give you potential business and potential clients. This equals more profit for you.

·        Keep your work area clean – Most window washing accidents are caused by people slipping on water or soap, or a combination of both. By wiping up spills, you can prevent any accidents from happening to you.

·        Being cheap is the way to go – Because you’re just starting out, you can offer quality service at lower prices than commercial cleaning companies. Don’t be too cheap—you still need to make a profit. Letting your clients know that you will do the same job for less gives you more profit in the long run.

·        Do a good job! – This is most important tip of all. A good job means that your clients will call you again, which means more work for you and more work = more money. And who wouldn’t want that?

If you’ve decided to include window washing as part of your cleaning services, here is a final tip for you:

·        Let your steady clients know – if you’ve already built up a steady stream of clients from your home or office cleaning business, let them know that you’re now offering window washing services as well. Offer to include it in your home services price or give them a taste (a freebie) of what you can do for them. If they already have a separate window cleaner, this might convince them that you are the one stop shop for all purpose cleaning.

Sounds easy, doesn’t it? You’re on your way to becoming a professional window cleaner. Get your squeegee and go! You’ll have money rolling in, in no time at all!
