Are More Expensive HDMI Cables Worth It?

Posted: Sep 02, 2010 |

How can a product that looks the same on the outside be priced so differently? The debate of whether the purchase of more expensive HDMI cables is worth it or not has been argued as long as the price differences have existed. The same price variations can also be found with DVI-HDMI, DVI-DVI, and DVI-VGA cables. The products primarily focused on here will be HDMI cables and their value versus cost.

Most arguments about the price variations found in HDMI cables are argued between technical junkies, using terms that a lot of consumers cannot comprehend. This is what spurs the debate among many consumers because they do not understand the technical jargon. What can also happen because of this is the purchase of cheap HDMI cables among consumers who think that the ability that expensive ones have to aid in their home theatre experience is simply a myth. Others do the opposite and assume that because one HDMI cable costs more, it must be perfect for every situation. After all, most people with a great deal of technology in their lives know that quality equipment does not come cheap.

If you are a consumer who wants the highest quality without a compromise, you will undoubtedly want to go for a more expensive HDMI cable. Cheap models, even if they look like an HDMI connector, may not be certified. Be sure to look for the HDMI logo which indicates that it has been inspected by HDMI Licensing LLC. On the other hand, simply because you want quality does not mean you want to burn a hole in your pocket. Still, more expensive cables are capable of withstanding wear much more effectively than cheaper HDMI cables. Output can fall short over an extended period due to the problem of patch cords that have shorted out in cheaper models. Also, the more expensive models are generally newer products on the market with higher bandwidth and bit-rate capabilities. This by itself improves the appearance of anything you are watching on your HDTV.

Length is another reason for one HDMI cable to be more expensive than another. The greater the length of the cable, the more signal is lost unless you buy a high-end HDMI cable. The added functions that lessen the loss of signal are what create the large price difference between shorter and longer HDMI cables. For this reason, you should procure the shortest HDMI cable you can manage so you pay less for the length and experience less signal loss as well.
