Plug your new HDTV into a your (basic) cable and you're sure to get a picture, but it won't be in HD. You also need these three components - your favorite show in HD format, an HDTV channel and the source also needs to be in HDTV.

Satellite subscribers: Before you can watch your programs in HD, you will need an HD format box, all cable subscribers will need an HD  source cable. HD format boxes are typically more expensive than regular ones, and in the case of cable, they might not carry all HD channels or even be available in all areas. There is also a third source which is free broadcasts in high definition format, from some of the major tv networks. Search for free HDTV broadcasts online, to find out more.

The HD format channels are the same as regular stations, but you can view HD shows to. Cable and satellite providers who provide HD channels, also typically offer regular channels as well. So when you subscribe to an HD service, you'll probably get the non-HD version on a completely different channel. There are many more regular, a.k.a. normal or standard channels, than HD channels at the moment, but as time goes on more and more tv providers are diversifying. Most networks now show both standard and HD programs, which can be watched at the same time.

You've plugged your new HDTV into a new HDTV cable box, and you're tuned in to an HD channel, so you must be watching in HD, yes? You may not be, sorry. Some HDTV channels broadcast everything in high definition format. But most providers will show both formats on two separate channels. Unfortunately, not every show on a network's HD channel actually appears in high-def. Many still appear in standard definition, and a many programs for example local news, are not in HD yet either. Regular programs, although on HD channels will not be a sharp as the high definition ones and do not normally fill the wide screen completely. Some channels show bars to either side of standard format programs. But most of the major programs are thankfully shown in HD format.
