With HD, Even Boyfriends Won't Object to a Chick Flick

High definition television has proven to be one of the best-selling and most popular of all the technological advances made in recent years. The list of its satisfied subscribers knows no bounds, from grandparents, to sports fans, to college students, to holiday shoppers looking for that perfect gift...all come away pleased with their new purchase, which will certainly continue to delight for many years to come.

Many of the thousands of television shows and hundreds of channels available through a variety of cable packages are also able to be enjoyed in HD. Sports fans watch popular programming such as is available through the NFL Sunday Ticket, kids take in all the adventure and excitement of a travel holiday through The Travel Channel or Discovery Kids, and for husbands and wives with varying tastes, compromising on the nightly television selection is easier than ever.

Husbands can share their affinity for a particular team and introduce their wives to the lively world of major league sports, while wives can enjoy teaching their husbands about the nuances of classic romantic comedies. And there is no better time to start than now, as a star-studded selection of chick flicks came out this summer, and are now available for home viewing in HD. If more traditional examples of the genre are your style, you may want to consider such popular movies as The Proposal or The Ugly Truth. If you prefer something a little more off-beat that doesn't bill itself as a romantic comedy, however, (500) Days of Summer could be just the thing.

The Proposal stars Sandra Bullock as an uptight executive who proposes to her assistant, Ryan Reynolds, in a last-ditch effort to avoid deportation to Canada due to an expired work visa. The stakes are high, as legal authorities are out to prove that their marriage is a sham, and the emotional ties that his family forms on their weekend adventure with the “happy couple” lead to some guilty consciences, to say the least. Will all of this soul-searching and opening up to one another lead to a real, mutual affection? Or will the initial foundation of lies and deceit prove too much to overcome?

The Ugly Truth, starring Katherine Heigl as Abby Richter and Gerard Butler as Mike Chadway, is a modern-day love triangle with a twist. The two leading characters hate each other, both being egocentric but possessing very strong, opposite views on men, women, and relationships. Seeing Mike's advice regarding the male perspective as chauvinistic and base, but admittedly not altogether useless, Abby agrees to take it in order to woo her attractive, doctor neighbor, Colin. She comes out of her endeavor with no small degree of success, but the question is, is he really who she wants?

(500) Days of Summer is about a romance between a boy (Tom) and a girl (Summer), but it is not in any way a typical chick flick. Told out of chronological order, the viewer sees the good and the bad, the ups and downs, and the beginning and end of their relationship. Summer does not believe in true love, and has no intention of settling down into a traditional marriage.  Tom is the poor guy who happens to fall in love with her.

With satellite television and many high definition options to suit every palate, even the most divergent of tastes can come together to enjoy a classic American past time.
