I am a freelance travel writer and I reside in Maine with my husband of 28 years. My website, http://travelwithlindabatey.wetpaint.com is where I post my journeys and experiences.
Not only does Peaks-Kenny State Park boast a sandy, shallow beach and mountain views, it also provides a great place for camping. The 56 tenting sites are large to insure privacy and is seldom full, even in August! The day use (beach) portion of the park gets full on hot summer afternoons and you may be turned back because of the lack of parking. Since there is no way to call ahead, you should plan to get there early in the day. There are flush toilets and showers for campers as well as day use visitors. Pets are allowed on leashes. Family camping is superb here because of the large sites, picnic areas, the playground on the lawn back from the swimming area, and the swimming area itself. The shallow water offers warm, safe swimming for kids of all ages, as well as a lifeguard.
This park sits on 839 acres, mostly all wooded. There are some easy hiking trails that are well marked and you can put in a kayak or canoe at the beach if you desire. If you have a larger boat to launch, head back out to 153 and continue another mile to Greeley's Landing, where there is a public boat launching facility.
To reach the Park, take Route 153 from Dover-Foxcroft; the entrance is 6 miles from town. The Park is open from May 15 to October 1 and a modest fee is charged. You can make online reservations by visiting http://www.state.me.us/doc/parks/reservations/ or you can call 800-332-1501 in Maine and 207-624-9950 from out of Maine. The reservations system closes from mid-September to February 2.
Peaks-Kenny State Park offers the best of both worlds for camping, offering needed amenities but still managing to be remote enough to say you've had a real Maine camping experience.
