Chinese Gap Years

In recent years China has become a popular destination for students leaving secondary school who wish to see a little more of the world before they embark upon their further education. China offers a culture that is totally different to the west.

From its food to its social conventions to its political system of governance, it will change your perspectives and open your mind to a myriad of possibilities. Whether you are interested in human rights or cultural development, conservational projects in the wild or to do with heritage, China is sure to have a gap year experience to suit you.

There are many other perks to choosing China as your gap year destination. If, for example, you stay long enough to master even a little of the mandarin language this will be an attractive addition to any curriculum vitae as far as future employment opportunities are concerned. The experience of living within a culture so vastly different from your own also demonstrates independence and effective adaptability that will no doubt also impress on any job applications you may make.

This not only allows successful applicants the opportunity to experience life in a completely different environment, but it also allows them to discover an entirely different educational system – a fascinating reflection on the country’s system of government. For anyone interested in discovering more about a country that had closed its doors to the west for so long and which still remains intensely mysterious, this could be an invaluable opportunity.

All kinds of other opportunities are also available. If wildlife conservation is your passion then you might like to consider volunteering at one of the panda sanctuaries, mostly situated within the Yunnan province. If you’d simply like to see some exotic wildlife then think about going on a tropical forest expedition or a rainforest trek. China’s ecosystems are so diverse that there’s bound to be something to interest every budding botanist or zoologist.

An experience such as this will also improve your confidence in dealing with new and unfamiliar situations throughout your life, preparing you for all kinds of challenges you may face in the future.

There is a great deal of planning involved in a long trip to China, so if you think this is something you might like to do be sure to get yourself organised well in advance. There will be certain vaccinations that you require as well as a medical certificate proving your general health before you may apply for a Chinese visa.

If you’re staying and working for over 6 months you will also require a specific type of insurance. Many companies on the internet and beyond offer insurance that is specifically designed for backpackers and student travellers; so be sure to check that out before you leave in order to be certain that your trip will be a safe one.
